Russian architecture both horrifies and entrances me

The Russian-Ukrainian style of white church, with its long thin windows, almost oblique secretive appearance, is based though. Not the highly ornamented ones, but the more simple looking ones. They have a deep unity of expressive feeling, they are like individual stalks of a plant rising into bulbs, (but not all the stalks, some are just bundled together and end in small domes) but united in a concrete setting that gives them immense weight and situates them on the ground. The multiple crosses is also significant- on a Gothic cathedral the crosses are almost indistinguishable from the spires and the entire things blends into one image that is dominated by its highest points, and has a deeply powerful sense of rising upwards, and an ethereal airlike quality. The russian churches give a horizontal feeling of united essences, which are unequal, at different levels, but united in some way, it is more solid and firm than a gothic cathedral, yet less imposing. The Russian church is as yet not really understandable for me though, it is still vague, i cannot put together all the bits of it, and it seems almost that they have not even developed yet the true form that they are going towards with it.
