How does /lit/ feel about the Jowett translations of Plato's work? And Plato himself?

"Now for divine begettings there is a period comprehended by a perfect number, and for mortal by the first in which augmentations dominating and dominated when they have attained to three distances and four limits of the assimilating and the dissimilating, the waxing and the waning, render all things conversable and commensurable [546c] with one another, whereof a basal four-thirds wedded to the pempad yields two harmonies at the third augmentation, the one the product of equal factors taken one hundred times, the other of equal length one way but oblong,-one dimension of a hundred numbers determined by the rational diameters of the pempad lacking one in each case, or of the irrational lacking two; the other dimension of a hundred cubes of the triad. And this entire geometrical number is determinative of this thing, of better and inferior births."

Plato's metaphysics of the soul are quite literally the Phenomenology of Spirit, the only missing link is Hegel calls the Notion that which defines the Absolute and the making of the Spirit is also due to the Notion.

It seems that Plato's entire summation of the soul is grounded on an architype of its existence against the body, but all Hegel does is add the element of time saying that the Spirit (Spirit and soul being equal in this context) is formed through sense-certainty perception. Plato also states that the soul is defined by nothing, this is clearly the object in itself that defines our Spirit. What ways do they substantially diverge? I'm quite lost

What did you guys think of the Republic? I feel like Plato should have defined justice more thoroughly, does he do this in a different book?

I thought he defined a just man well, but I was curious to know what kind of laws/legal system he would find just. I know that in his city he outlawed gold and silver, along with licentious poetry and music, but I would love to know what kind of laws his city would have

My first introduction was actually analytic, I was rather young and the like so it had a profound influence on my babby steps in debate/ philosophy. Of course when realizing how fucked I was, I started with the Greeks.

I would call myself smarter than the average person, or I am at least not a brainlet. Reading books has never been one of my greatest interests. I'm not bad at reading, not at all, I just happen to find more interesting platforms that give me more enjoyment than books (e.g. Cinema and Vidya). I am, however, willing to start somewhere. I'd like to start reading philosophy since it has always interested me, but I have no idea where to start.

Suggest anything you like.

Lifetime nonfiction reader here.

I tried this week to read fiction for the first time since high school because I ran out of shit to watch on youtube.

I got 100 pages into the book "Dune" (lots and lots of best-scifi lists put this one at the top 5). Mildly amusing, but I don't get how the movie isn't just as good or better (even for 1984, the special effects were pretty satisfying).

Do you feel smarter from reading fiction? You really shouldn't. What a waste of ink and paper. Go read a fucking textbook and stop wasting your time with this shit, movies are faster.

What is some essential secondary lit for Plato? I've read quite a bit of him and I'd like to hear what others have to say.
