>And my faithful August Kettler, the first of many servants to die in my service, fell victim to a shrapnel that passed through his windpipe as he was on his way to Monchy to get my lunch. As he was setting off with the mess-tins, I had called out to him: 'August, mind how you go, won't you.' 'I'll be fine, Lieutenant!' And then I was summoned and found him lying on the ground close to the dugout, gurgling, as the air passed through the wound into his chest with every breath he took. I had him carried back; he died a few days later in hospital. It was a feature of his case, as it was of quite a few others, that his inability to speak made him even more pathetic, as he stared at the nurses in bewilderment like a tormented animal.

And this coming a little earlier. Great book.
>Throughout the war, it was always my endeavour to view my opponent without animus, and to form an opinion of him as a man on the basis of the courage he showed. I would always try and seek him out in combat and kill him, and I expected nothing else from him. But never did I entertain mean thoughts of him. When prisoners fell into my hands, later on, I felt responsible for their safety, and would always do everything in my power for them.

Living the dream. I had a girlfriend once and even tried doing the whole settling down thing once, you quickly feel yourself degrading physically and spiritually. Would not recommend.

>Really, doesn't everything make sense? There are, of course, things from which we more or less recover, although some of them are too harsh even for saints. But that is no reason to accuse God. Even if there are reasons to doubt him, the fact that he did not arrange the world like a well-ordered parlor is not one of them. It speaks rather in his favor. This used to be much better understood.

>It seems like French is the language in which most of his works were translated, so you have lots of stuff to read. I don't know if he still has really important works left untranslated, but even some of his stuff feels a bit minor but rarely lets down.

I was looking into this some time ago. A bit over a dozen of his books haven't been translated into French yet. Mostly minor works I think, but then it feels wrong to call any of his works minor.

These haven't been translated into French--English names taken from Google Translate. I may have missed a few.

>Blätter und Steine (Leaves and stones)
>Gärten und Straßen (Gardens and streets)
>Myrdun. Briefe aus Norwegen (Myrdun. Letters from Norway)
>Sprache und Körperbau (Language and physique)
>Ein Inselfrühling (An island spring)
>Am Kieselstrand (On the pebble beach)
>Über die Linie (About the line)
>Am Sarazenturm (At the Saracen tower)
>Jahre der Okkupation (Years of occupation)
>Typus Name Gestalt (Type Name Shape)
>Grenzgänge. Essays. Reden. Träume (Border Crossings. Essays. Talk. dreams)
>Sgraffiti
>Ad hoc
>Zahlen und Götter. Philemon und Baucis. Zwei Essays (Numbers and gods. Philemon and Baucis. Two essays)

As an aside, I don't think people realize how prodigious an author Junger was.
