WTF is the appeal of this book and why did Stanley Kubrick make a movie out of it?
God damn, I hate pedophilia so much.

What am I in for, is it really as bad as people say and should I read the book or watch the movie first?

I started reading pic related and I have to say that Nabokov's prose is immaculate (and it's crazy that English isn't even his native language). I can't help but thinking though that it sounds so much like Neutral Milk Hotel's prosody. Think there's any connection? Or is it just me?

Just finished this piece yesterday. I put it off forever, until I just recently felt like a had a good enough background in Western Literature to tackle it. I thought the juxtaposition of the beautiful prose, wordplay and references to the disgusting subject matter was the real kicker for me. However I keep hearing people throw around that HH was an unreliable narrator and there’s no way to know if any of the events in the story actually play out in the way he describes them but, to me, he seems a very prideful euro and in the end he basically makes himself to be this disheveled old monomaniac, a useless husk of the man he used to be when he had Lo. What do you guys think? Or just general /Lolita/ opinions I guess.

I think it is, I've been thinking about it.

A major theme of the book is doubles. Humbert's double is Claire Quilty, that's obvious enough, and so is his reflexive name, but I don't hear many people reach the conclusion that Dolores' double is Lolita. Dolores, the actual person, is not present in the novel, we don't know anything about her - her hair, eye, or skin color, anything about her personality. Its only Humbert's idea of her, Lolita, that he cultivates and ultimately obsesses over. I think this obsession and the way it consumes him is enough to make Humbert a lover, even if he may not be in love with anything tangible.

If all else fails, Its a story of a European falling in love with American culture and the English language. I'm not speaking about Humbert, I'm speaking about Nabokov.

I’m pleasantly surprised with this book. I half expected the entire story to be through H.H’s rose tinted lenses but instead it was gut-wrenching and I couldn’t be happier about it. One curious thing to note, Nabokov describes the sofa scene in full detail, but each instance where H.H rapes Lolita is one sentence at most simply saying they had sex. I thought about it for a bit and am I wrong to say he did this to filter the pedos? It makes it very clear that this is an upsetting story and not an erotica/romance you’d get off to. Lolita uses the word rape which in itself delivers the message clearly. What a punch this line is: “You revolting creature. I was a daisy-fresh girl, and look what you've done to me. I ought to call the police and tell them you raped me“ What an experience. I don’t think I could re-read this but i’m glad I got through it once.

Unironically what’s so great about Lolita? Convince me it’s more then just some erotica for nonces.
