It really, really depends on HOW you plan your trip. Psychedelics are proven to enhance communication between different parts of the brain that don't normally communicate that often. In other words, you gain the ability to look at things from a different perspective.
But most people fail to use that ability effectively during a trip. They will just watch some movie and listen to the same music they listen to sober. They focus on the whacky visuals instead of their heightened mind activity. I think your experience with psychedelic-users is limited to these kinds of people.
To properly use psychedelics for self-actualization you should evaluate your current life situation beforehand. Write down the parts where you are lacking. After thoroughly contemplating these aspects you might be able to gain new insights during the trip. When taking the substance, you should avoid screens and other distractions. I wouldn't even recommend listening to music until the trip is wearing off. Silence is infinitely more profound.

Anon, there is really a distinction between people who see psychedelics as some magic pill and those who are able to use it as a tool for self-development.
