shit was dark. also:
> childhood's end by arthur c clarke
> animal farm by george orwell
> lord of the flies by william golding
> hamlet and macbeth by william shakespeare
middle school core was legit. my love of reading and dark disturbing stories was born then.

>live life courageously, do interesting things, have life experiences worth writing about
>read a ton, become very exacting and committed as to what your authorial voice is and what you want to say, the topics you research and write about, etc.
>write a ton, write daily, git gud, be open to criticism, use the criticism to improve yourself
>get an MFA in creative writing, mostly for connections
>vibe with connected people and be charming at NYC readings and writers retreats
>get a teaching job in creative writing in higher ed so you have something to fall back on
basically all that and you might have a fighting chance. MIGHT. 99.8% of aspirational writers are doomed to absolute self-published (or online-only) obscurity.
most importantly:
>accept that the work is more important than success and that your responsibility is to the work above all. that way you can die happy even if you never "make it" as a "professional writer."

Friendly reminder to future parents or new parents that teaching your child to read as early as possible (As early as 2.5 or 3) will give them significant intellectual and academic advantages compared to later readers.

Don't wait for your kids to read until 5 or 6. Start as early as possible. Use synthetic phonics and phoneme awareness.
