Books that explore characters that are intrinsically bitter towards the world and feel petty joy from other peoples misfortune because they themselves are miserable and alone? Has anyone read a literature book where the character manages to defeat his bad thoughts and goes on to become a genuinely nice person?

I've never read his books, but at least Rothfuss is in his 40s and only has one book to write, compared to GRRM being in his 70s with two books to write.

No critique thread currently so here goes:

I enjoyed writing this piece. I’ve started to write a lot like this and it’s quite therapeutic. Anyway, I hope your New Years are fruitful atm with your writings.

It was a cold day. The type of day where the white clouds hang low and mothers make their children wear coats that engulf them—just to be safe.
On a flat rooftop, that didn’t stand as tall as most of its surrounding buildings and was in terrible condition by comparison, an elderly woman stepped outside with a basket of clothes and a bucket of pegs.
He would need fresh clothes, she thought, he’s been gone for so long.
Her son was returning today. He hadn’t visited since leaving—a plethora of different excuses—his mother cursed him for them. Family comes first, she would tell him.
She pulled out a single jumper, a red-blue-striped-polyester-cotton ensemble. She didn’t know how he could wear something so hideous. She had half a mind to throw it away but he loved it, and he was coming home today, so she hung it on the line with a red peg and a blue one.
Sirens whirred past below. The lights often crept up the adjacent apartments and she would peer over the side to see which direction they were headed but not today, she had to hang these clothes.
After hanging underwear, she pulled out a soaking T-shirt. Across it: DOWNLOAD 2015. She was very worried when he went there. She knew those sort of places, or she knew what she heard was probably sound. Drugs, STDs, injuries. He hadn’t came home with any, luckily, although she had checked every pocket twice for peace of mind. One red peg, and a blue one.
There were more sirens passing, and this time she looked over. The road was congested. Even with their red-and-blue flashing lights and their whirring sirens, they couldn’t make it far.
Terrible time to be coming back home, she thought, her son would be caught in traffic because of this ruckus. No problem, he would be home soon.

*

The sirens faded long after the lights did. She finished hanging up his clothes, two black pegs holding up a small faded T-shirt, and captioned: ‘Till Death Do Us Part. And she went back inside with basket and bucket in hand.
The phone rang as she let herself in. He must be apologising, she thought. It was no bother really, she would tell him that, she was just glad he’d be home soon.
She answered, “Hello?”
“Is this Mrs. Lee? This is Officer Wan.”

>tfw your prose will never be as good as Tolkien’s
Reading his work genuinely makes me depressed. The writing drips with melancholy, and invokes a deep sense of stillness which maddens me. I can’t emulate such a way with words. The people in my life say that my prose is amazing, but I know that they are just lying to make me feel better. How do you even cope with this?
