Gotrek and Felix. Only the ones written by William King, the rest suck.

No you don't. 40k is absolute garbage, but worse than that, it's absolute garbage with HUNDREDS of books. It's like wanting to get into american superhero comics, a bad idea that's a tremendous waste of time.

Read the Gotrek and Felix novels by William King. These are Warhammer Fantasy, which benefits from being far less bloated, and also from being completely abandoned by Games Workshop in the early 2k's, so it wasn't infected with their Current Year bullshit when they jumped on that bandwagon. Also, as a stand alone fantasy series, the Gotrek and Felix novels are actually quite good.

Not him, but if you want more of that, try the Gotrek and Felix novels by William King. The viewpoint character is primarily Felix, the human, but there's a lot of emphasis on the contrast between Dwarf culture and human culture, which is an early point of tension between the two characters. Warhammer novels get a bad rap, which they mostly deserve, but William King manages to make it shine. Although it does take him a few stories to really hammer out the character dynamics, the first half of the series starts off as collections of short stories, happening as Gotrek and Felix progress toward their destination, a city called Karak Eight Peaks.

The 40k ones are pretty cinge, but the Gotrek and Felix series is decent enough. I like the setting, instead of medieval it's more renaissance with a bunch of slightly anachronistic shit as a result of cultural cross pollination, such as one of the stories focusing on a bunch of Skaven (giant sentient, paranoid rats that are almost as evil as they are incompetent) trying to steal a steam powered tank from an Imperial Military College.

Can anyone point me towards stuff similar in tone to the Gotrek and Felix novels? Focused on short stories, pulpy with a shade of gothic horror, characters facing off against overwhelming odds and things they have no right surviving?

I always hated Drizzt, he's basically Sasuke except DnD. Honestly if you want to read some trashy fantasy that's executed well you're better off with the Gotrek and Felix novels by William King.

So lately I've been reading some of the Gotrek and Felix novels by William King. I am only passingly familiar with Warhammer (by that I mean I know it exists, and that's about it), but I picked some of these up because eh, I was bored, why not?
The premise starts out simple. Felix, the initially somewhat foppish human, gets his bacon saved by Gotrek after engaging in some ill-advised political activism. Gotrek is a Slayer, a Dwarf sworn to seek death in unequal combat against the forces of evil to atone for a sin. After Gotrek bails him out, he and Felix go on a bender and Felix, being a wannabe Poet, makes an Oath to Gotrek to record his doom and make an epic of it. This is complicated by the fact that Gotrek is a four foot Terminator and has legitimate issues finding anything even capable of killing him.

The editions I'm reading are omnibuses, so there's multiple full books and short stories all packed together, some by different authors.
All in all, I like it. It's not perfect by any means, and the pacing is often an issue with sections seeming to drag, but despite that it's kept me reading though close to 2,000 pages now. There's something to be said for just executing a cliche well, and this series generally does.

I've been reading the Gotrek and Felix books by William King and they're pretty alright. They're based on the Warhammer setting which I am only passingly familiar with, but the first book has managed to keep me going. The first book is made up entirely of short stories, I'm told the second one has a single plot. It doesn't really colour outside the lines, but it does what it sets out to do well.
