Nothing is uninteresting to kids or too complicated for kids - unless they were raised on regular broadcast TV, ads and all.
Start kids off with the Greek myths and other great stuff like Wind in the Willows, Hans Christian Andersen, and they be able to appreciate things with depth and they won't be impatient shallow little brats who need to mainline loud sounds and louder colours 24/7.

Harness very superficial talents and qualities; compile them into something that you can list off upon first interaction and continue to ride. For example: pick up an instrument that makes you seem unique in some way, i.e violin/harp/piano/orchestra instrument. Mention what you write, if you do - women especially will fall into a deeper interest with you if you say that you write.

Other than that, try to find some fundamentally 'cool' activities to build upon that aren't entirely niche.
