This book will teach you the business side. You get started by thinking of a story you want to write and writing it. You'll be shit for about 5 good years before you get better; you can accelerate this by reading a lot of high quality books that you want to write like.
Writers get paid what their network pays them. If you're just interested in selling novels, keep a day job. If you're aiming to become a doctor, Anton Chekov was a doctor and a very good writer of short stories. It's doable.

Of course marketing is the right thing to do. His annoying bullshit was what everyone disagreed with. He wasn't trying to find an audience who would engage with his books. He was doing follow unfollow scams and bragging about how great his books are going to sell to his fans. He didn't get that he doesn't have fans: he has 3000 strangers on the internet. And because he stapled marketing to all his posts, it became bad by association.

I've tried recently and in the past to clean up marketing's bad name around here. I recommend this book when the opportunity presents itself as it dispels a lot of myths commonly parroted here.

Read pic related especially the essays and nonfiction chapters. Tl;dr you need to put your work where people are and build it up over several years. Don't be in a rush to get things "out there", as rushing a work guarantees its failure.

Guys, I know I'm shilling, but I'm 7 chapters in and I really truly think you ought to read this book.
