Kind of ironic that he of all people ran himself into the ground and into the grave, working and tiring himself to death in a spiral of hedonism. Running hither and thither trying to fix problems he sowed himself due to following his own philosophy.
>and god forbid anybody have him as a father

How "seriously" should one take life, /lit/?

You look at someone like Beethoven and it's like damn this guy is fucking serious

Is life really conducive to that kind of seriousness?

Tell me your thoughts, /lit/

what about a westerner unironically shilling a rubbish secularized eastern religion with reddit status enthusiasm is so annoying and disgusting?

>no, no, buddhism is science! we checked the data from this study and people who meditate have less stress at work so they can work more hours at the job they have, so everything is one!

I've just reread 'The wisdom of Insecurity' and wondered, provided how many books Alan Watts, whether his whole body of work is just a shopping scheme or does it really had to be put into so many little books? Why didn't he put some anthology of ideas instead of making that many books about seemingly same subject?

I'm looking for a life changing book. Any recommendations?

No commercial self-help tomes or Nihilism please. I'm looking for more spiritual/philosophical books but with a practical side. Preferably non-fiction but happy to look into fiction titles.

I'm at my lowest point and don't see a future for myself. I need something or someone to relate to. I need to snap out of it and I figured a good book could be a good way of doing this

I was listening to some Alan Watts lectures last night and started questioning my existence last night so I wrote this little verse; if anyone else has any favourite philosophers they'd like to recommend that'd be cool too

>If i find my true self then what is there left to achieve
>What if I can't find something greater than me
>My existence is meaningless but yet is the reason itself
>That this reality is materialised in indefinite being
>Thus life’s circular purpose is of little reprieve

>I cannot be certain if our reality itself is truly real this feeling of uncertainty lest we digest
>We feel everything before we know what it is to feel
>Predestined in time, our existence of choice and consequence
>Are synchronisms of our conscious being revealed

After hearing some lectures of Alan Watts i got quite interested in eastern philosophy and philosophy in general - does someone have recommendations for good /lit/erature if you are a beginner ? - guess I'm the 1000001 who asks the same question - im thinking about nietzsche, schopenhauer or freud but asian lit would be also a start

>talks about indian, japanese, chinese, even western christian wisdom

...idk why but all that mixture seems odd. can one truly attain something while mixing all that? shouldnt one choose one single way to fully develop it or, if one has done that with all of them, shouldnt one be able to create an original one?

I've seen a bunch of his lectures, discussions and explanations and whatnot and he's an interesting man. He has written a shitton of books. What are his best books to start?
