It was just meh overall.
I was looking to read some books about wizards and only after committing to reading it I found out how homosexual this book is, though the romance was rather tastefully done. So looking from the GRI angle the book is totally gay, with only a dash of implied rape and some weird sub-dom magical slavery kept in the family. The magic and the setting in this book was alright. But the main plot mystery, the Really Bad Guys and their diabolical plan with their half-baked greater good justification, and the climactic confrontation at the end was a little stupid if you ask me.

The second book does take place on another planet, but it's still the same shitty cyber-dystopia, and I think it's good. Also, there are some important differences in how the adaptation handled the Envoy Core and Quellcrist Falconer.
