Reminds me of Deleuze somehow, it's a matter of finding a way to reconcile meaning and matter rather than taking either for granted in a sense. Gramsci seemed to know that his position was a reversal of the standard positions. Tbqh we still have religious people taking the world for granted and it's more obvious than ever in the political climate (environmentalism etc.) so Gramsci's point isn't that strange. It's a bit like Nietzsche's dictum that man must become master of the Earth not as its indifferent exploiter, but rather as being attached to it by nature (recognizing one's immanent position rather than looking towards a transcendent justification). Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
