Garnett is the best translation by far and nothing comes close for a variety of reasons, but one of the reasons people generally fail to mention is that she was also the one responsible for popularizing Dosto in the west. In a sense it is responsible for his reputation and when you engage with this version you are engaging with the same version other people have historically speaking, you are more part of the 'conversation' this way.

The revised Garnett is also worth considering and sort of modernizes a few clunky phrases but eh, I wouldn't say either is directly better than the other. Each has strong and weak points.

At the end of the day it comes down to taste, just compare various versions and pick which you like. Pic related.

Personally, I've found that I always enjoy Dostoevsky more when the translation isn't by P&V. Don't fall for their publisher's slick marketing. By no means are they a "definitive" translation. Some translations are more literal to Dostoevsky's style, while others are focused on intent. There are further guides and comparisons across the net that give greater detail to each translator's style, but you can at least compare P&V with your copy and see if even the first page is worth the change.

P&V lean on Garnett more than Matthew, Mark and Luke lean on Q.

For the most part, P&V take her sentence structures, and substitute a different word or phrase.

How many times must we have this thread The typical view is go for the revised Garnett if you can, the Garnett if you can't, and to avoid P&V at all costs.

It's simple, you look at various translations, and decide which one is best. What other fucking way can there be?
