Is Wittgenstein's infamous 7th proposition a normative statement? By "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent." does he really mean, "Thereof one OUGHT TO be silent."? Or does he mean it is physically impossible to discuss what one cannot conceive? Isn't this trivial? I cannot discuss what I cannot discuss?

Will reading Wittgenstein help me develop my ataraxia?

Which others authors will help me doing so?

Ludwig Wittgenstein was a right-wing or a left-wing philosopher?

I have read the Tractatus and the Investigations and some stuff on it on the internet; as I am very interested in his thought, what would you recommend reading next? I'd be especially interested in his (later?) thought on ethics/culture etc.

English/German language doesn't matter

Hey guys, just a reminder that there is an ongoing /lit/ Wittgenstein study and discussion group, studying the Philosophical Investigations. It's been seven weeks and we're still going strong.

If you missed any meetings in the past, don't worry, it's still possible to get on board! The next meeting is this Saturday 28th September, at 8pm GMT! All you have to do is show up on irc.rizon.net, at #wittgenstein at this time, having read sections 65 - 77.

Here's a copy of the text:
http://gormendizer.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ludwig.Wittgenstein.-.Philosophical.Investigations.pdf

Please feel free to discuss anything about Wittgenstein you'd like in this thread, or ask any questions about how to use IRC and so on.

Hey /lit/! Where should I start up with reading Ludwig Wittgenstein? Also if you can give me a little bit of an insight into his philosophy it would be most welcome!

Avid Wikipeida reader here. I think I'm about ready to start reading books. Can you guys tell me which philosopher is right? I promise to read him/her if you answer properly.

There was a German who lived in Cambridge
His autism made his philosophy garbage
He wrote impenetrably
and published intermittently
Yet is worshiped as a grand dean of knowledge.

I'd like /lit/'s opinion on something...

You won't care about the majority of the thing because it is related to /mlp/ and their stick.

That said, I'd like some critique of the introductory material, which isn't related to that at all, up until 1:45.

those asshats can't into any sort of proper criticism most of the time

Wittgenstein...

Because I just can't get any use out of the others. They mean little in comparison. He was on the right Tract to enable me to picture what language is. Plus he was witty, and knew how to stop talking when he couldn't really say anything more...

please don't hate me.

>Someone is imprisoned in a room if the door is unlocked, opens inwards; but it doesn't occur to him to pull, rather than push against it. The solution of the problem you see in life is a way of living which makes what is problematic disappear. The fact that life is problematic means that your life does not fit life's shape. So you must change your life, and once it fits the shape, what is problematic will disappear. But don't we have the feeling that someone who doesn't see a problem there is blind to something important, indeed to what is most important of all? Wouldn't I like to say he is living aimlessly--just blindly like a mole as it were; and if he could only see, he would see the problem? Or shouldn't I say: someone who lives rightly does not experience the problem as sorrow, hence not after all as a problem, but rather as joy, that is so to speak as a bright halo round his life, not a murky background.

What is the state of Wittgenstein's philosophy /lit/?

Is it still accepted as valid? Has it been refuted? Are parts of it still taken as valid?
