I'm so fucking sick of working. I want to stay home and read and write but I have a wife and we need both of our incomes to support us. I just got rejected from the only MFA program I could apply for so that's no stipend and no end to the wageslavery for me. Still haven't been published. I'm never going to fucking make it.

How do I stop writing like Wallace?

So we all know that there is nothing new under the sun and all plots and characters are just stolen from other works, but my question is this: at what point does something begin to seem obviously derivative? For instance, the novel I'm writing features a private religious school and a powerful, history altering object. It's also written in a sort of postmodern style. How likely is it that people will draw comparisons to Infinite Jest? Am I overanalyzing this? What are your thoughts on originality in fiction and how do you cope with its lack?

How do I start reading more? There's so much I'm interested in reading about but my mind is messed up by years of scanning Wikipedia articles about to sit down and pay my full attention to a book.
