Lacan and many of his close colleagues were notorious for abusing mathematical language and distorting the meanings from the original source into whatever they wanted terms and expressions to mean. Of course this has gotten a lot of the super cereal scientists absolutely mad, to the point Sokal (a mathematician) and Bricmont have written a whole book solely to shit on his and other names as being "unscientific", "pseudos" and "charlatans".

The thing about Zizek and some of the other writers who praise Lacan, is that they never quite had this contact with the anti-Lacan sentiment sprouted by the angry scientific community.

Also, in my opinion (as a physicist if this should even matter), is that Sokal went the wrong way about this. We don't want to kill people simply because they said the room is getting cold rather than say that the room is losing heat, and likewise we ought to teach people what we think about things like particles and light interaction and such, rather than shunning them for listening to a "pseudo" explanation, precisely because our own explanation is not available at all. I don't like it when I read Land talking about Negentropy or when psychologists talk about Field theory but I don't disregard absolutely everything else they wrote because of it.

I'd even go as far as saying Lacan has value in the field of psychoanalysis and the field of psychoanalysis itself has value related to how we deal with our sentiment in non-empirical terms (and we will do that, regardless of whether or not you want to impose the joy of neuroscience to everyone and their mothers). Philosophers like Sadler and many other academics who have read far more than I ever did have also not come to the same conclusions as Sokal about Lacan, so you should definitely do your own reading of him rather than disregarding the source because a mathematician said you can't write "topology" outside of a theorem/demonstration structure.

Most Japanese can't, I doubt he knows a lot about sex too, it's not about the act per se but the idealizations of sex, something virgins can understand very well.

This is an interesting question - I'll just write my not very well thought out opinion here. This is all I can manage at this moment, but OP you made me wonder, so someday I'll be more clear once I work things out in my mind. Let this just be the foundation.

Mass dissociation period before an effective supervening so-called cultural normativity which can be shared or manufactured. Pretty much as it is now on the level of say maintaining national cultural but much more widespread through various media. Personally, I find national cultural unity to be waning in my limited view of THIS part of the world. Anyway, what I mean is a more intended and multi-focused propaganda to promote the idea of shared identity. After that system is established, I suppose, then the various sub-cultures will become more exposed to one another and become more accepted for their characteristics insofar they too reform to be what is deemed more 'acceptable' in the view of the other(s) and the 'monarch of unity' so to speak. Yet, the supposed monarch will be much like Big Brother and you may not be able to distinguish it from its sibling, Salesman Sam, because they'll be everywhere and watching - and they'll watch enough so they aptly will be able to make you dance and think the way they want because they'll know how you'll think and act; well, as much as feasibly possible.

That's all I have energy to venture right now. Now I'm going to eat sandwiches and wonder about all this for a long while.

I just finished reading Thrawn by Zahn, the new one. I am really hoping Thrawn's continued 'plans' are not an attempt to stop that force that is seeking to harm his homeworld. I also really hope that force isn't the fucking Vong.

>people acting like this is somehow new

Almost every person I know over sixty still talks about Winnie the Pooh, for God's sake.

People always consider the time in which they live, in some way, less good than other time periods. This in itself is a form of escapism, an effort in pathologizing away very real problems that you or people in your life might have in the present. There are articles like this every year, and they're always written by the same sort of person: people who are disgruntled that they aren't part of the Elite, and feel they ought to be in those rings.

These books aren't good, mind. I'm not giving them carte blanche to be horrible works. A supermajority of all media consumed is simplistic and derivative. There is still value in those things, if only to call attention to their many failings and general dearth of ideas. To claim it's somehow more infantilizing than being swaddled in the booming, bald-faced fictions in our sociopolitical ideologies is laughable, though.
