It's worse than with Herodotus.
I'm reading the Hellenica now. The introduction was 40 pages worth of some literal who whining that Xenophon doesn't line up with some fragments that have been found but we aren't sure who they're by (unknown source is more credible than a known one)

>he relied on his memories rather than other historians
Dude was alive at the time, why would he do research when he witnessed it? The notes continuing the seething, with complaints that the accounts don't line up with someone who was alive like 300 years later.

What he do to make modern historians so butt hurt?

>Days and days of marching
>No plot, no character development, just marching
>Reach epic battle scene
>Main character immediately dies
>Flashback showing his life and exploits just like an anime sequence
>Flash-forward to him getting his head and arms cut off, and the Greeks being suddenly stuck in a foreign country surrounded by enemies
>End book one
Was not expecting this book to become so absolutely kino so quickly. Anybody else read Anabasis?

Why should I read Xenophon?

Which authors do you think led the best life /lit/?

Pic related, xenophon led a very "balanced" life, being a respected author and historian, as well as a soldier and having an allegedly qt wife. He didn't neglect an area of human experience to be an author like, e.g. the moustache man.
