>If the reeks were so gay and cool with it then why do you always have to read between the lines of vague innuendos?

>No, pleasure was the mediator even of their friendship. At any rate, when Achilles was lamenting the death of Patroclus, his unrestrained feelings made him burst out with the truth and say "The converse of our thighs my tears do mourn with duteous piety."
Lucian, Amores 54
>Every dumb animal only screws. But we reasoning men have this over other animals, we have discovered butt-fucking. But those who conquer women, they have nothing over dumb animals.
Strato, AP 12.245
>Heavens above! the wide-assed are the vast majority.
Aristophanes, The Clouds
>If a beautiful boy doesn’t give his ass to be fucked, may he not get a fuck when he falls in love with a beautiful girl.
Greek graffito from Stabiae
>Heraclitus was beautiful, when he once was. But now, past his youth, a screen of hide declares war on those who would mount from behind.
Meleager, AP 12.33
>Men who are sliced from the wholly male original seek out males, and being slices of the male, while they are still boys they feel affection for men and take pleasure in lying beside or entwined with them. In youth and young manhood this sort of male is the best because he is by nature the most manly. Some people say such males are without shame, but that is not true. They do what they do not out of shamelessness but out of confidence, courage and manliness, and they embrace that which is like themselves. And there is good evidence for this in the fact that only males of this type, when they are grown up, prove to be the real men in politics.
Aristophanes, Symposium, 191e-192c

>is it not the same for the greeks?
What do you mean? The Greeks did not use the same conceptual categories as us. But males had genital arousal and genital stimulation with other males.

I started with the greeks, but I don't understand why all books have pederasty references. What was up with that? Why was it so popular?

>Ezra once, after much nagging from Eliot's part, fucked him between his thighs. I wouldn't personally call him bi based just on that, but a reasonable argument could be made.

This.

The Greeks were not like us. We can conceive how they thought (object based sexuality vs individual based sexuality) but we cannot really grasp how they internally processed their world view (Did you hear of Alexios? He has received his beard and is being honored into the fratry! We were deep in the cups with Eutropios last night, he mourns the loss of Alexios' youth and the love they shared, and we all wept that Alexios was to take a wife in a fortnight!)

Two questions:

1.) What's the best English translation for "Symposium"? Should I just stick with the Oxford Classics edition?

2.) What other books are there like the "Symposium," where you have a meeting of men discussing a topic to it's furthest depth?
