Which of the two 'start with the greeks' meme charts is better? And do you, personally, have any changes you'd make?

Why does /lit/ recommend Robert Fagles' translation of the Iliad and Oddesy over other translations? this chart doesn't explain it.

Do I absolutely NEED to read the Iliad and Odyssey? I know this makes me sound like a philistine and an idiot, that's because I am both. Can someone tell me specifically how reading these would benefit me as I move along? Is it just gaining insight into their attitudes and culture and the context in which plato and co. exist? If so why do I need to read this boring shit to understand that? Aren't there some cliff notes somewhere? Honestly goddamn

Don't care about the other books for the sake of this post, but fagles is best for reading and staying truest to the homeric stories - in so far as that they're supposed to be sung! You can sing his works! The meaning comes across, despite not sticking to the word for word like Pope.

Don't get me wrong, the classical guys are great, but Fagles is by far the best thats come out, especially for a very public audience. There's something to be said for its worth if even people that aren't normally into classical literature dig his renditions. t. classics major

Okay, well then you're actually getting a good early start. Read the charts definitely. If you want to understand philosophy, start with the Greeks. You don't need to read every book on this chart, some books are supplemental reading to understand the classics or stuff like the Greek Epic Fragments (you definitely need to read Homer though)
From Plato and Aristotle, you don't need to read the complete works. For Plato, read
>Apology
>Euthyphro
>Crito
>The Symposium
>Phaedo
>Republic
>Parmenides
For Aristotle, read
>Ethics
>Politics
>On Poetry
>The Organon
>Phtsics
>On The Soul
>Rhetoric
There are a ton of /lit/ philosophers who can guide you through your journey in philosophy better than I can
