The native idea that the camera captures one's soul is essentially true. If we are to understand being in relation to artistic tools a simple comparison is useful. As opposed objects of conflicting eras the camera may be set against the Aegis, the petrified gorgon. Conceived as objects of power these tool-idols are effectively the same, but in terms of orientation they are complete opposites. The Aegis is the image of the utmost violence, a portal to the the no man's land where one confronts a territory of fate, not only his own but that of his line and his people. One is judged by earth forces in confrontation with divine genealogy. This is Diomedes and Glaucus retelling their family histories before battle, their oath to friendship and honour. Absolute power ends the world, even historicizes the gods; both armies disappear into a silence before such a contest.

The camera's orientation is completely different, it eliminates the subjects and spectators into another world entirely. It is roughly the equivalent of capturing Glaucus' humiliation, his witless exchange of armour before Zeus as the eternity of his being. The ancients would be horrified by such vulgar displays of power and cruelty. This is Goethe's Medusa, one whose power is less direct, incapable of petrifying a great being, but increases power through corruption and mobilisation to one's will.

Junger discusses the cruelty of capturing the moment of impact of a soldier's death, the exploding shell or bullet. This is perhaps something worse than capturing one's soul, instead annihilating it, turning it into a curse, or using it as a mobilising force. This is, again, a completely opposed world to that imagined by the Greeks: the statue of the hero, and the Unknown Soldier captured in his last moments as an image to be used against the law of war. Not only is he humiliated, but his image is set against his very being, and all those who share in it.

“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.”
- Epictitus
You, like all moderns, have confused this with the transitional elimination of desires; wealth as the sacrifice of material.

I have a coomer brain that has been desensitized from a life of shallow entertainment and flashing lights.

I want to be better and to leave this degeneracy, but I can't seem to focus when reading and as a result, it takes me a while to get through any material.

What should I do, /lit/?
