Well, that's an evolution of the way Tolkien built a mythopoetic second world instead of the more traditional approach which was either embedded in a culture and mythos where this wasn't necessary or simply let the imagination loose without bothering with much worldbuilding or anything like that. Burroughs wrote a lot of Tarzan and Barsoom stories, but each one was a complete and self-contained, it was the opposite of binge material. The characters and setting was pretty much just a vehicle to tell stories.

Modern books seems to be written like TV shows more than anything else, with endless storylines and filler. And while the legacy of Tolkien is still present they lack so many of the qualities which made him such a good writer. There is no purpose or meaning to their crafted universes, nor to the length of it all.

That's my take on it anyway, I don't have the time to read these insane multitudes of doorstops.
