Asoiaf takes it to another new level though. GRRM just outright copy-pastes things. Not saying he's bad though; he's actually quite good at this. Maybe this is one reason his characters are so iconic. They are replicas of the same figures that have intrigued human imagination for centuries.

What are the chances of four fantasy cliches coinciding with each other, all while each one of them had almost the same name when mentioned in the other book?
When grrm makes references to someone else he does so openly. I'm getting the feeling that this is the case here too. Either grrm was influenced by this guy or they were friends.
