The principal difference between nominalists and realists is the belief in the existence of universals. Because realists believe in universals, syllogistic logic is a valid form of reasoning. Because nominalists do not believe in universals and instead believe that everything in existence is a radically individual object, syllogistic logic is not a valid form of reasoning. Nominalistic thought snowballed into humanism, Protestantism, secularism, and modernism. How interesting it is to note that all animals are nominalists, in that they don't have the capacity to grasp universals. Yet, those who have the capacity for abstraction and willingly deny it themselves debase themselves and others to a dignity that is less than that of animals. All the misery of the modern era are rooted in the errors of the nominalist metaphysic.

Atheism is the logical conclusion of Protestantism, that's why. The modern and postmodern world came from Protestants. If God is purely omnipotent in His will and is "no man's debtor", such arbitrarity and incoherence could only ever result in dismissal by rational men. This is why Catholic countries such as Italy and Hungary are the most traditional in the West and retain their identities in their Catholicism.

Lots of things. Catholics have realist metaphysics and Protestants have nominalist metaphysics, which is a very significant difference that has bore out over the past 500 years.
