Which of these are actually worth reading if I don't care about
1. mindless action
2. endless scenery description with no point beyond explaining scenery

What do these genres even mean? And which of these are actually worth reading, assuming I've read none?

Are fantasy and sci-fi books worth reading? If so, what are some good starting point for a complete newbie into those two genres? I've been thinking about reading Do Androids Think of Electric Sheep, but I'm tempted to just watch Blade Runner instead. Also, the only fantasy series I've really only read was unfortunately Harry Potter, so I really want to see much more of what the genre is capable of.

Who else is the big deal in fantasy at the moment? I mean people who are still alive and strike a pretty good balance between popularity and also critical success? Don't give mention 'underrated gems', I want the names of the really big shots.

(Disclaimer: I left names like Sanderson and Goodkind out cause they may be popular but certainly not critically acclaimed*
