What's the best version of the bible that is easy to understand but retains the poetry of ancient stories?
My friend gave me his KJV bible and it is so difficult to understand, but I'd like to read the whole thing

This book is completely inert for me. I can read Western transcendentalist poetry or Zen texts and parables or things like that, and then feel a deepened connection to nature and to my fellow man. I read the KJB and feel absolutely nothing. I want to. But I don't. This is a paperweight.
