what I'm trying to get at is - which of the Foundation books are actually worth my time? (and not necessarily the "reading order") With Dune, you can make the argument to read all 6 of Frank's book, or stop at God Emperor, or hell just stop at book 1 (my personal opinion). With Foundation - should I just read the original trilogy and stop there? Or go on?

It is a good book. Every book in the series (except Children) improves on the previous books. Contrary to what most believe, Chapter-House is actually the best book (source: me).

NTA, no in the first. People will seethe at this, but the only difference between Anne Rice and Herbert is that Dune series maintained its quality in writing, but it went off the rails into weird shit just as hard. The Dune reading chart exists for a reason.

Thanks anon. After that scene, I'm now planning to read through God-Emperor per this image's recommendation. I don't quite know what it means by "weird," but if it means themes and symbols with mystical/religious import, it shouldn't be as challenging as it cautions.

All decent stopping points. Getting into prophecy and tech stuff with the Tleilax is intredasting.

This Dune guide seems good.
Question: I've seen the 2021 film and I don't want to be spoiled by Dune: Part 2. How much of the first book was the film?

Is it bad?
That's a difficult question. Children is a much more adventure-ish book than Messiah. The meme that it's bad comes from the infamous reddit chart, which reminds me I should make my own.
Anyway, it's not bad. Things go real bad during Heretics because that one is a slog, but the ending of Chapterhouse is actually pretty good and makes the entire series worth it.

Read only Frank's own books, of which there are six in the Dune franchise.

Pic related sums up /lit/'s general attitude on the series, not sure who you were talking to to get "everyone" telling you the rest of the series is shit. God Emperor is typically held up as a competitor against the original Dune as Herbert's magnum opus.
Haven't read Heretics or Chapterhouse myself, but it sounds like they're still pretty good but ultimately go nowhere due to Herbert's death, and the conclusion to the story written by his son and that other faggot are big disappointments.

Whether The Sir Fat Man ever finishes it or not, anything else that comes out will result in a chart like this. There will be a guide to show you what tier you should read until, with like Winds of Winter being in the shit tier.

I believe those charts are quite old, and might be found in older links of the old generals where the paste was different. Not sure.

>>20451940
Yes, the axis are very subjective and arbitrary and the chart hosts even the soul-less weapon races and chorae.
