ITT: books that made you feel immense sadness. Not necessarily cry-core but that's applicable too.

Pic related. Sancho's parting words to Don Quixote.

No doubt, hands down a perfect novel. It's hilarious and tragic in equal amounts with genuine chemistry and friendship between the central characters as well as some very detailed backstories and digressions that are surprisingly just as fun as the rest of the book.

I cried when Don Quixote and Sancho Panza couldn't continue their misadventures as shepherds.

If your name is called, you have your next book to read.

Here's your newest favourite book, Arthur.

Which book is perfect in your eyes, anon? Not just something you enjoyed, but something that's a full 10/10 for you.

If you can, suggest another book you think that fellow anon may also enjoy.

For me it's Don Quixote. My heart broke when it finished, Sancho and Don Quixote never got to be those shepherds.

Good choice. I'm a huge Bernhard fan. (Extinction is probably my favorite) Seems like Bernhard fans are few and far between, but his fans fucking LOVE his work. I would say he's the best novelist to come out of the second half of the century.

I'm finishing up my second read-through of Don Quixote

I'm considering reading "Don Quixote," but I know jack all about 16th century Spain (or whenever/wherever it's set). How much is this going to inhibit me from understanding and appreciating the book?

For instance, though I would have understood the basic storyline of "Les Miserables" even without knowing much about the French Revolution and Napoleon, I think that I was able to get a lot more out of the book for understanding its historical context.

I haven't finished reading the Penguin Books translation, but so far I've laughed during every chapter, and I've been genuinely surprised by how much I'm enjoying the book. It has a good pace, the writing is witty, and the whole story has a charming tone that borders on parody and reality. It deserves all the praise it gets.
