I guess laptops at least used to typically be pretty expensive.

And I haven't compared prices on a new pre-built system in a long time, but I suspect desktops are still the better dollar-for-dollar value.

That said, we're all university students here, just like the rest of 4chan, so we all have laptops. They're easier to move into and out of apartments/dorms with, and are compatible with, or simply come included with, their own little computer equivalent to bike locks. And hardware whole-drive encryption, and computer lo-jack schemes of various kinds, etc.

My laptop has been really useful during storms. If I become homeless, I'll be able to take it with me. Other than that I hate dusting it out every month or so because the keyboard becomes uncomfortable to type on from the heat. Laptops aren't bad though..but I do want a desktop for games.

He's probably referring to the fact that 4chan has a strong following among college students.

I discovered 4chan as a college student. But I dropped out and became a NEET, so it's okay.

>> No.9980329

>>9980302
The "just like the rest of 4chan" is pretty wrong, too. I think /b/ is mainly teenage normals in high school who found 4chan >6 months ago. It's a process where the ones leaving are constantly replaced with the ones coming in, with some anomalies here and there.

/v/ is also far too saturated with teenagers to be college students on average, not to mention that video gaming is a common hobby of the hikiNEET. The same thing can be said for /a/. You've now got the three largest boards all not representing all, or mostly, college students.

This question is constantly seen as a troll thread topic on /g/, but only due to denial and shame because so many 4channers are guilty of purchasing on impulse rather than practicality.

Cheaper.
Much more difficult to break.
Lasts longer.
No battery to worry about.

Biggest problem for me with my laptop is the hard drive. It needs to spin down when it's not in use to prevent shock damage and save the battery, but most Linux applications don't seem to be designed to work well in laptop environments; ie, when they need to save something, instead of starting a save and letting me get on with my work, they go unresponsive for a second. This happens all the time, and it's annoying as fuck.

Even though I didn't really have this problem on Windows, hearing the hard drive constantly spinning up and down really bothered me.

I'm going to get more RAM, an SSD, and turn off swapping so that I never have to worry about this again. I'll probably enjoy my laptop a lot more after that; at the moment, it's hard for me to use this without getting distracted by its inner workings and worrying if what I'm doing is causing long term damage to any of its components. Never had that with a desktop or a phone.

Game ports take forever, if you even get a port at all.

For the same price, you could build a top of the line gaming rig.

Wow, I'm such a faggot. I just typed up a history of my imageboard usage before I realized that no one would give a fuck about that.

I'll just summarize it by asking if anyone remembers Renchan, and wondering what it means if someone has been browsing other smaller imageboards since 2006, but only started browsing 4chan for more than just porn and image dumps in 2008. Not that I really give a damn what random people consider to be "true /jp/easies" or anything, but there was a lot more to English imageboard culture than just 4chan in the past. Yeah, I browsed 420chan for quite a while as well. I left quite a bit later (2008-ish), as they deleted their anime board and started banning people for talking about it around the same time that I got back into anime. Remember "Lucky Star Appreciation Threads"?

I never got into 7chan, but 99chan was decent for a little bit. iichan (or "The Wakachan Network" or whatever they're calling it) has always been a little too dead for me to participate in, but I had a good few weeks digging through their threads.
