IN is the best to start because it actually requires some skills to play.

EoSD is just about pressing X to collect bullets. You won't learn anything from that.

With PCB, the only thing you can learn is grazing without holding SHIFT but because you always have to do that with perfectly safe cherry border on for some reasons, you won't go anywhere.

MoF is just about waiting for point items to drop near the bottom of the screen and then collect them. You won't learn anything from that.

In SA, you only press left or right button to move from this side of the screen to the other and the bullets never hit you. You won't learn anything from that.

In UFO, the only thing you learn is trying to not having a seizure because all those bullets and UFO keep flashing.

TD is the worst. You press X twice to collect spirits then you press C to throw away those spirits. Repeat ad infinitum for maximum autism.

My first 1cc on Hard (with Border team)! I played awfully against Eirin (4 lives lost and 8 bombs) but the result remains slightly better than for my first 1cc on normal. >>9680607
Then I tried route B with Reimu solo to unlock one of the last spells and failed miserably. It's not the same thing when the orbs are always solid.

The end stages always kick me around too, too many reps in the stages 1-4 and not enough in 6. 5 is pretty easy, except for that one impossible spell and annoying Tewi.

I started with SA because it was the only one available to me at the time, then I progressed with MoF for quite awhile. Both aren't especially good starters because of the system that allows for expendable bombing (moreso for MOF because of the extra bomb stock and that bombs are incredibly powerful despite being plenty). That actually made me screw up alot in the other games because I didn't know how to conserve my bombs. Or at least, not spamming them recklessly. I don't know which game to recommend starting with though. Maybe UFO because it's harder, but then the UFO system could interfere with normal gameplay. I guess the best choice is just to play the one you're comfortable with.

It's only bad if you don't plan your focusing in PCB and IN. In the rest of the games, whether you dodge while focus or not, it makes little to no difference in score.

it's not a bad idea per se, since in Touhou the bullet barrages are tight and slow. But if you have problems in a part of the game you should try to do some unfocused movement and maybe you'll find the trick to that particular pattern or attack.

How exactly is SanaeB harder in stages 1-4?
I can only come up with two things that are harder from top of my head:
Kogasa's first spellcard and stage 4 fairies you can't cheese. Other than that she's by far the easiest shottype for those and the latter stages.

hmmm it's kind of difficult and in the end, a matter of luck. Just pay more attention to the sides of the cage she's done than the big bullets.

Also, you have to know perfectly the hitbox of the big bullets because most of the times you lose an scape route for doubting if you will get through.

Yes, the stage 4 fairies are harder. I find Kogasa's first spell to be the easiest with SanaeB as long as you know the trick. She often does less damage to bosses, especially those that move, and she does low damage at a high range, even without focus.

Who said I detest the shmups forum? I don't usually prefer to do my communication on forums and I prefer to talk about mostly Touhou instead of general shmups. I simply never found a reason to move elsewhere.

I don't know about mizuumi, but I haven't seen that kind of behavior from #PoFV in a long time. It's much quieter than it used to be, and I'm not responsible for the behavior of its inhabitants.

Also, I don't play this game competitively. I am not competitive by nature. I prefer to work at my own pace instead of comparing myself to others.

Youmu's actually pretty damn strong on IN extra. There's nowhere that familiars are that much of a problem like they are in Marisa's fight; heck, most cards don't even have familiars that cut your beefy damage in half. The only card that I would say is a pain with solo-Youmu compared to anyone else is Everlasting "Phoenix's Tail."

Plus it makes Hourai Doll even more of a joke than it already is.

Nothing is going my way today. I felt like I was playing really well in training, so I did full runs for a few hours. I only made it to stage 3 once with my target score, but I fucked everything up. I had another run that was going really poorly, but somehow I still had a decent score by the final stage. I died within seconds to popcorn that never, ever kills me.

I know how that feels with just about everything I try to do. It took me nearly five years to get to a respectable level in Quake 3 Arena, and almost six years to loop DoDonPachi. This was with stage practice and a load of memorization.

I've also played stepmania and other rhythm games. To my dismay, I'm bad at them no matter how much I practice. It feels pretty bad being a useless human being with no talents.

From memory, I did start with 7 lives, although I don't think that mattered as much considering I ended with 5 or 6 lives at the end anyway and I did occasionally death bomb from time to time. The main problem with TD is I find most of the spellcards to be extremely annoying and hard to predict (pretty much all of Seiga's) and I lose a life due to clip deaths mostly.

Basically every time you get hit and announce a clip death out loud, it means it's the game's fault you died not yours.
And the more you do this the better at Touhou you'll get.

The game never lies. The way I understand it, clip deaths arise from the player not having a good estimation of their character's hitbox and/or the bullet's hitbox, resulting in a death that could be easily avoided with some tapping.

You don't get nearly as many faith-items-from-points-items as you do faith-items-from-cancelled-bullets, especially if you do it at the right times (like those linear waves of bullets right before Momiji).

I mean, they're the same value, but you'd only get 20 for not bombing for 1.00 Power's worth, so as long as you cancel more than 20 bullets (which is very easy to do) you've got a net increase.

I think I'm finally getting good at the Touhou. I can beat the first stage of MoFHard somewhat reliably, and Normal mode on there bores me to tears. Haven't tested on the other games, but I remember being pretty darn good at EoSDNormal back in the day.

Finally managed to beat an extra boss.
I still have no idea how to do "possessed by phoenix" (except the first part) and used 4 bombs and lost 2 lives on it, but oh well.
Guess I'll try Mamizou then stop with the extra bosses, since they are the only ones with spell practice (although Ran seems relatively easy, maybe because Yukari is the real extra boss).

Baby steps. Had a terribly tragic death on the last non spell, causing me to lose my pace and screw up royally on the Fujiyama Volcano (4 or 5 bombs), which shouldn't happen. Screwed up Xu-Fu and Honest Man's Death as per usual, but almost a 52M bonus on Possessed by Phoenix and a 39.9M bonus on Keine's second spell.
