Depends on what you define as having learned Japanese. You learn things by doing them. If you want to learn enough to play eroge, you will learn it by playing eroge. If you want to learn enough to talk in Japanese, you can only learn it by talking in Japanese. So if you don't plan to use Japanese with other people, you don't need other people to learn it.

It's not fucking rocket science.

>> No.9914787

I learned to read Japanese by myself. I can't speak it, and my listening comprehension leaves a lot to be desired, but I can form sentences well enough to make the occasional post on 2ch, and my reading comprehension is enough to understand pretty much any book/comic/game without a hitch.

At those prices I sure can't. I have kind of or at least sort of struggled to learn it myself for years, and I absolutely can't endorse the idea of paying these sickening prices when there is no guarantee that it will even amount to anything.

I mean, it's not like it's $600 for a guarantee of learning Japanese.
I mean, if there was some kind of gurantee then sure, that's a fair price. But as it is I would rather just use that money to buy some games, or a meiki onahole, and then just go about and casually try to learn each time I hear or read any Japanese by myself.

I'm in the same situation as >>9914787 is. Studied the language just for visual novels so I can read (and listen) quite well, though my output skills are still bad. To compare; two of my friends who took actual language courses can speak and write much better than I do though they can't read anything but the simplest of stuff assisted with furigana.

Plus the hardest obstacle in learning Japanese is just the writing system (which takes plenty of pure memorization). Everything else is very easy.

They can write *some* stuff. When I said I'm bad at output skills, I meant that I'm REALLY bad. I always forget how the radicals look like, not to mention what kanji they're used for.

F.ex. I can easily read something like 愚か者, but I can never remember the strokes for either of those kanji when I'm supposed to write it out myself. I even sometimes forget kana strokes, but have no trouble distinguishing them in texts.
Speaking about handwriting of course.

I'm a little lost so I'll ask, if I want to learn how to read text as quickly as possible, completely ignoring writing and other skills, what exactly is the path I should follow? A couple of months ago, I tried to pick it up by this guide http://visualnovelaer.wordpress.com/2011/12/06/how-to-read-visual-novels-in-japanese-in-2-years-time
-step-by-step-guide-%E2%80%95-learn-to-read-through-vn-or-anime/
, but when we started having some Anki threads a few weeks back and it came up again, many people said that the hesig method was not good because it didn't teach you any readings for the kanji. Looking back, it made sense so I decided to abandon that method, but for a while, I felt very lost and asked about what I should do. Some kind anon suggested I downloaded some JLPT decks and started to drill those instead, but then THAT anon was shot down by another saying that said decks weren't very effective for some reason and another.

I really didn't want to lose my stride, but the work was piling up so I decided to delete everything and start fresh on something else while I gathered some info. I even installed Rosetta Stone and downloaded some raws just so I have an excuse to study more time per day, but I still feel pretty lost.

So I feel the need to ask. If you were to learn the language from scratch simply to enjoy media like VN's, what's the best approach to take? I just really want to stop fighting over my tools and focus on the learning for once.

Stick with Anki decks or use Memrise. Memrise has Heisig courses, but also teach the readings on top of it. The format is like a game, which makes it a bit more fun than just grinding away flashcards. After you get some vocab under your belt, read Tae Kim's Grammar Guide.

I did the whole of the 1st Heisig and reviewed for a few months. The original way, not Aeeru's kanji to keyword since that's simply retarded because you should try to remember forms and stroke orders not FUCKING ENGLISH KEYWORDS. In retrospect I would recommend Heisig only to those who
A. Have really hard time distinguishing kanji
B. Are learning handwriting
Second Heisig book is just stupid. It doesn't teach enough readings, and the one it does teach are just thrown there, but their uses in actual words aren't really elaborated. Vocabulary is best learned in context.
F.ex. the Core 2000 deck and onwards are really good vocabulary learning tools (though some of the vocab leans on "business life" area) and so is everything you make yourself using Anki's Yomichan add-on with text hooks (AGTH / ITH -> play game -> copy pasta the output into a text file -> make new cards using Yomichan).

In short, here's what I did to learn Japanese
1. Kana
2. Heisig 1 (which wasn't that useful in retrospect)
3. Tae Kim's Grammar Guide (teaches you almost everything related grammar in easy to understand way)
4. Core 2000 deck
5. Start reading VNs / playing games, make decks using Yomichan
6. Keep making new cards, stop at some point and just immerse myself and keep reading stuff with text hookers' help (for Rikaichan / JParser)

Took less than two years and I can now read most stuff (SubaHibi, Asairo, Grisaia level).

I've found a good one, JLPT Practise. It hasn't got the updated N5, but it's good anyway. It's basically just like anki, flash cards, but I like this one, since I don't have to make my own to get the Kanji, the meaning and the readings all in one.

I intend to finish this JLPT level 3, which I suspect is N4 and maybe some N5 kanji, then focus on learning various common words, by reading manga with furigana. Then N3, etc.

If I know a word in Japanese, aside from a handful of easily remembered exceptions, I can spell it, due to the consistency of kana. How do those learning it as a second language remember so many arbitrary spellings that the natives just learn through many years of experience?

I imagine the grammar is difficult to, due to being entirely regulated by what "sounds right", rather than by any real consistent rules.
