Almost all recent anime series get fansubbed by several different teams. It also happens frequently for manga scanlations, especially if they're popular.

And someday, it WILL happen for a VN, that's a certitude. It's not even a matter of time nor audience growth ; all it will take is a translator being douche enough to start it. And then, showers of blood and piss.

I would bet on moogy if he weren't so lazy, but IMHO the most likely to do it are Gipface's crew or Insemination. But hey, Aroduc or some random, unknown translator are not out of the picture at all.

It really depends. I think the hobbiest translators (the ones who translate things because they like them) will transition to whatever interests them most, and some of them like VNs a lot. The e-peen TLs will go for whatever's in high demand, be it manga, LNs or VNs.

It is quite unlikely for fan translations of visual novels to compete with one another (with both translators willing to see it through to the end) as long as only a small fraction of visual novels are translated. There are two translators, one of whom is Finnish. She has a site up with the translated text she did up until about Noize's first appearance; she stopped posting updates after that because the group doing the patch recruited her.
Her fluency is decent, but not very experienced-sounding. (i.e. Aoba saying he thinks the name of the store where he works is "bimyou" was translated as the literal "delicate" rather than the implied meaning of "weird").

The other one IDK. It's not the same translator as Togainu, though.

>> No.9802620

>>9802600

I think I read some of the Finnish TL's stuff, she seems to have a decent handle on grammar but gets thrown off by non-dictionary uses of words very easily (I remember seeing her completely misinterpret Aoba's insinuations about giving the caller in the first scene a "special service" if he placed an order).

If the other TL is on a comparable level or higher, as long as they have a sensible editor it'll probably be serviceable. I feel like most of these errors are obvious enough on the English side (at least in that there's something clearly off about the phrasing) that a decent editor should be able to pick up on them.

I know you're a troll, but just for the less technically proficient people here:
1) A program does not 'compile' at an end user's system. It just runs.
2) A program saving data will correctly save data regardless of the specs of the system (the only exception being the device the data is being saved to, usually the HDD) or its stability. The only impact stability has is that data can be corrupted if the system crashes or turns off while saving.
3) Programs compile perfectly fine even on the slowest and most unstable of systems, it can just be very slow and the resulting program data can be corrupted by above power-off during save issue or a defective HDD (both could also happen on a high-end PC).

You're forgetting about Java, ECMAScript, Python, PHP etc but otherwise you're mostly correct.

There are some times where strange errors can happen due to hardware failure though, I have a working motherboard whose SATA controller randomly flips bits once every hour and I've experienced faulty RAM fucking up the execution state of programs randomly.

I doubt Aroduc has such problems though.

How the hell? Most BIOSes auto-shutdown at bootup if there are RAM errors.

>You're forgetting about Java, ECMAScript, Python, PHP etc but otherwise you're mostly correct.
I took those into account; those languages are all interpreted, not compiled at runtime. Java is always anal so you won't notice the difference as a programmer, but I know that at least in PHP and Python you can have as many syntax errors as you want and it'll just keep interpreting until it hits one (whereas in a compiled language it would just refuse to compile and not execute a single line). Python apparently even lets you catch syntax errors, which I really should mess around with sometime since it sounds hilarious.

Each statement is interpreted separately by the 'virtual machine' (Java/Python/PHP, the program) in the same way ASM instructions are interpreted in order by the operating system. Compiling is when you directly convert the interpretable lines to ASM or similar.

RAM enumeration during boot only checks the presence of the banks, not each and every cell. Memtest is what can help one determine for sure if the memory subsystem is faulty.

>I know that at least in PHP and Python you can have as many syntax errors as you want and it'll just keep interpreting until it hits one

Look up pypy and hiphop-PHP. In any case, modern JITs can compile to machine code and still stop execution on error. It's a bit complicated to describe here but basically the scripts are broken down into many segments of assembly that the JIT glues together, keeping track of global variables, scope and whatnot. It's not like you load handlebar.js into Spidermonkey, it spits out machine code and then does nothing else...

VNs have become much more PC-intensive the past couple years. For example, try Rewrite and just watch how much the intro lags older systems. It didn't even run right on my previous system (dual core 2.8 ghz, 4 GB RAM, fitting NVIDIA graphics card, not sure which one it was).

Of course, all of these newfangled special effects are so simple they could also run on a single-core 1GHZ...but as CPU power/RAM/graphics cards improve, programmers get lazier and lazier (and VN programmers are terrible in general), resulting in very inefficient stuff.

Not to say I'm in agony or anything, but I was definitely lacking the enthusiasm that I normally have for translation, which is what made such ludicrous speeds possible. Of course, for that exact same reason, I was also in no mood to tweet about anything. Well done me. Anyway I'm mostly settled into my new apartment and classes have started up so I'm trying to get back into the habit of translating again. In fact, today I did at least 500 lines (probably more) of a common route segment unique to Shizuru. So there's nothing to worry about.

Day 1282
The Ixrec is starting to experience life outside of translation. The knowledge of 'fun' has severely impacted his ability to translate, and the possibility of escalation is worrying. >Why people are interpreting this as him intending to become another overworked Japanese salaryman for the rest of his life and never again have an ounce of free time as a result is beyond me.

Maybe because it's exactly what happened to TakaJun.

Of course, everyone has to earn a living eventually, so Ixrec won't keep churning out at that pace forever.

My first attempt was ~2 years ago. I downloaded Genki but stopped midway because I didn't understand one lesson (retarded, I know). Still, it taught me the basics like conjugation, declination and some particles. Last year I found Tae Kim and downloaded Anki, that and dozens of hours with untranslated VNs took me slowly the point where the gibberish started to make sense. I'm sure it could go even faster, but I'm notoriously lazy and hate boring stuff. The start was a bit painful, but it was never boring.

Dynamic linking is your friend. It's almost unbelievable the first time you watch a 64K demo but then you realise that it's nothing special, just that all *other* software is grossly inefficient. With the default options on a C compiler the typical "hello world" on Windows is over 40KB of mostly useless code.

...now compare that with what can be done in only 4KB:

Mesha by Picard it's not a trap / Rhyme.

>>9807965
Text doesn't compress well, in comparison to everything else in a 64K. FHTRANS' finished script was ~3.5MB. Compressed with 7z at maximum, it's still 920KB. Procedurally generate the rest of the content and you might be able to fit the whole of FH in 1440KB, still pretty good. (If we had all the time in the world, we'd probably try this out just to say we're the first to release a translation patch that *is* the complete VN, in 1/1000th the size of the original!)

>I have to say I like the dark tone that is being set here. Yuuhi’s “heroic charge” and the fact that he thought he could win against a Musha, a being of immense power, just had me shaking me head in disapproval. It might excite fans of shounen heroism, and personally, I was reminded of Fate/Stay Night and its terribly idealistic main character, Emiya Shirou, who, despite being a high school student, somehow ends up defeating one of the most powerful beings in the franchise. It’s utter nonsense. Needless to say, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa’s big “fuck you” to the entire “Emiya Shirou” mentality had me fist pumping like crazy.
