I think it takes the right kind of video game to become something on-par with "art" as a concept, something that can be considered beautiful. Obviously, corporate games are on-par with a child's doodle. I think, perhaps Dwarf Fortress can be a good bar to set. Toady makes that game simply because he wants a good game, and gives it away for free, with no alternative motives, not even fame, he just wants to spread some happiness. Obviously there aren't too many games like that at all, but it's about the only thing I'm willing to settle with.

Low level shit continues to grow lower level to appeal to the lowest common denominator, this is most obvious in anime and manga with popular anime adaptions, but also shows more recently in the figure and doujinshi game markets as well.

I would imagine it is becoming a trend, but by it's very nature a significant portion of it simply can't appeal to this people for being too far gone from their comfort zone. Whether that will change in the near future or not is too hard to say. But there will remain a divide of those people who have interests in what was formally seen as otaku culture, and the things only a rabid fan who devotes the bulk of his energy towards could appreciate.

Amusingly, you'll hear more and more yahoo answers quality posts about how people into incest, loli, and other less widely accepted fetishes as those people who are dragging down the market, and the enemy of any "true" otaku, as this gathers steam.

Normals getting tricked into thinking otacool is something to be proud of. It's glorious really, because they will be so shocked when they see the truth and realize how disgusting otaku culture really is. Or they will just turn it normal by being the majority like what happen with Western Touhou culture.

It has already happen with video games. Being a nerd is cool and all the jocks and "hot" chicks in school are calling themselves "nerds" or gamers. The real nerd culture is just a shadow in the background and the real nerds are mixed up with all the wannabes who just follow the latest fad.

Newfag here. Yesterday I watched Otaku no Video and it just blew my mind how different the otaku culture was in the beginings than it is today. They had real passion: organizing your team of videotaper friends to tape every tv anime that would be aired, stealing cels from anime studios, "researching lolicon" (whatever may that mean) in a college club... nowadays everyone just downloads everything and consumes. Otaku culture will die out without passion because passion makes an otaku an otaku.
inb4 I know that Otaku no Video interviews were not real. But still... I believe they weren't so fsr from the truth.

Okay I was mistaken. There were about two halls not three.
1 east hall was entirely dedicated to Touhou, but there was about 1/3th of the next hall added to it. There was also another hall on the opposite which was about 2/3th Touhou. So thats two out of six. Not counting west halls because they are for commercial companies where Touhou does not reside and does not represent the current 'culture' as much.
Still 2 halls is quite a lot. It's like a sea of Touhou.
