I had an amazing idea earlier about a magical girl "racing" game. Full 3d moe moe girls, racing to do things like collect stars while flying above the clouds with awesome dash and grab moves, or out run a tentacle beast while trying to shoot the others so they fall into it until there's only one standing, or racing normally but with danmaku and space warping spells everywhere.

and i think i know why, partly.

remember that the length of the bone form the upper arm is the same length as the lower arm + half the hand (to the knuckles)
basically the stubble representing the elbow on that pic is completely misplaced.

yeah, perspective and foreshortening can be hard.

Looks to me like that head is in a bit unnatural position compared to the torso. Tilting to her right, stretching neck and looking down-left. Like you started with a standard face and ended with a fancy angle for the body.

Yeah, it looks like you're making more or less consistently the same mistakes with the arm muscles and sometimes elbows. Too bad, unlearning something can be a bitch. And I want to say you understand how the collarbones work but I'm not entirely sure.

Does anyone ever stream their drawings, or is anyone willing to? I really want to watch someone that is skilled at coloring, but almost all videos I see of good artists are sped up by ten times so I can't follow what they are doing at all or see their settings. I'm using SAI and I tried coloring for the first time yesterday but I was really just winging it. I tried mimicking the coloring and shading on a couple of different drawings but I didn't feel like I was doing it right because of settings.

For now it's mostly experimenting, the final goal is to build a real-time home surveillance system that can monitor and log people going in and out.

Pretty good. In fact, if I hadn't known any better and someone told me those were music from some indie/semi-professional game I'd be keen on believing them, actually. Counterpoints give me hard-ons, so it was pleasant hearing that in an OC music, however light the usage is.

But I'll try to give some suggestions anyway. Try listening and writing other genres, especially those that you wouldn't even dream of hearing. Closing yourself off is a very easy way to musical suicide, and incorporating new ideas is a very easy way to move forward.

Look at how songs are usually structured in other genres and try incorporating that into your compositions. If you're used to the strictness of common practice-influenced style, try some freeform or fusion jazz for a more liberated approach. If you're used to the modern approach of intro-verse-chorus, try some 20+ minute-ish space prog rock and their 10 minute improv section or something, I don't know.

Write. Write a lot. Try writing some fugues or canons or whatever. Try writing longer songs and longer motifs. Try writing shorter songs and work with fewer ideas. Experiment with things you haven't done before.

Make a conscious decision of how you're gonna structure your ideas before you write anything. Write consciously; don't go into "the zone" for too long. You know what I'm talking about, that period when you're on autopilot and just writing whatever comes to mind like you're some medium channeling the heavens itself or whatever? Keep that to a minimum.

Point is, just try new things. Learn new things. You seem to be pretty comfortable with your fundamentals, so it shouldn't be that difficult.

Thanks. I think after reading that I'd already realized most of it through my own deduction but you explained it in a way I can now set some direction on my composition.

I've been meaning to hook my guitar back up and record some stuff there, but I just haven't had the time outside work and study. But that's my next goal anyway, to get some more heavy rock style stuff going.

I listen to a heap of music, but like you say I just stay in the 'zone' pretty much 90% of my composition time. Bad bad, but hey I enjoy it.
