I can memorize all sorts of differential formulas and physics constants, but if I don't know what to do WITH them, the endeavor is moot.
Unlike in school as it is often done, problems are not always conveniently pigeonholed into categories that the students can recognize and "apply" formulas as taught. Scientific and mathematical finesse reaches beyond simple memorization, although it is a vital part of the process.
