Imagine that there is a button which will automatically make you Japanese if you press it.

Pressing this button will kill every member of your immediate family, but if you do it then you will be instantly reborn as a Japanese boy or girl (your choice) in a friendly and affluent family. You will retain all of the knowledge and memories that you currently have, but you will lose the knowledge of any languages that you currently know until you are of the appropriate age. This is so that you don't pop out of your new Japanese mother and immediately begin to speak fluent English and scare the shit out of everyone.

Does this part really matter? If I was reborn as someone on a whole different continent with no connection to my family at all then wouldn't they for all intents and purposes be dead anyway?

It's like that "if a tree falls in the forest" thing. If I can't see my family or ever interact with them again then how would this be different than if they were dead? They would live on and do things, but since I would have no knowledge of any of the things that they're doing on the other side of the planet then it's pretty much the same as if they were dead.
