Are you able to understand Japanese people when they speak?

Learning how to read Japanese wasn't that hard, mostly just a lot of very time consuming memorization, but I'm hopeless when it comes to trying to understand Japanese when it's spoken. I can pretty much only play VNs since anything else has voice acting.

The words just don't sound the same and it's often spoken really fast or slurred together, especially those delinquent characters that speak like yakuza. I can barely understand a word they're saying.

I have trouble understanding Kansai dialect. They sound like valley girls mixed with someone from the deep south like New Orleans and I already have enough trouble understanding those people and they're english.

The only solution I can think of is to maximize your exposure. Anime, drama CDs, J-dramas, just listen to a variety of different mediums and hopefully you'll become accustomed to it.

How many VNs have you played?
I was like that for a while, but after 20 VNs I suddenly became able to watch anime raw. Probably would have been much faster if I actually watched anime/movies/dramas or something, as opposed to only playing VNs.

The point is, it will probably come naturally if you keep reading VNs, even if it doesn't come super quickly that way.

Then get a VN that has voice acting in it plus the text.

I can't understand anything those babbling gooks say.
I heard they eat raw fish too. Barbarians.

It's reverse for me.
Be it watching anime, or playing games. I can always understand about 80-90% of spoken japanese. But in VNs, kanji part always spoils fun for me.
