not generally worried about it. the ankle joint is tight and well sealed, and the leg is just a tube which can be cleaned easily if need be. at worst, a new foot could be bought as a replacement part for cheap. more important is getting her to stand firmly enough to step back and take a picture without falling over - the face could hit a rock and smear or something. that wouldnt be cool.

From what I've read, it seems the Dollfie Dream series is the most well liked, but is so expensive. Would it really be so bad to go with the smaller Dollfie model?

Also do you have to manually paint the face details or do the base models come pre painted? I intend on getting glass or acrylic eyes, because the painted on eyes don't look too good in my opinion. But I mean the mouth, nose, and eyebrow details. If they don't come pre painted, how hard is that to do?

I know this is a lot of questions, sorry. Just kind of overwhelmed and the Volks USA site doesn't seem to have much detail on each part.

Just feel I need to add that DDII's are discontinued and only can be obtained on the used market, So the tradeoffs on seeking a DDII over a DDIII may include getting one with one or more of the following flaws if the body isn't from a new/unopened box

loose joints where tightening is not available
damaged/cracked joints where tightening may have been attempted
stains
color shift due to age

Be also forewarned of the early DDIIs which had weak neck joints. Prior to roughly 2009 the springs in the necks were prone to failing if the heads were not removed in a careful manner. These can be easily identified by the visible neck spring anchor (left, top.) The later ones seem to have sealed necks and an indirectly tensioned ball joint assembly that seem a lot stronger (bottom)

11cm would work fine for the piccos, but the preferred head for customs is you guessed it, the obitsu 21-23cm heads, specifically model 21-01 (comes rooted as well, currently available on HobbySearch), although I think the Usako looks cute too. Azone has edit heads available, but as far as I know they are sold out at all the EN dealers with no plans of restock.
I've never done decal eyes before, so I don't know, but I have this theory that instead of trimming so close to the eye, you could leave a little more edge so it might be easier to handle, and then with some kind of very fine tool use a tiny amount of acetone afterwards to remove the excess. Just a theory though.

check out page 91 for tweaking your image in the camera prior to taking a shot. My preferences are to bump up the sharpness to "4" contrast to "+2" and saturation to "+3"

Then check out page 99 for white balance, which can be useful when shooting under different conditions (daylight, tungsten light, cloudy, fluorescent, etc) The section on custom white balance may also be of interest if the above fail. All you need is a white piece of paper.

If you're feeling industrious, the "WB shift/bkt" section on page 101 can be used to fix (or create) a color cast or hue. With enough time you can use these settings to create more dynamic looking shots straight out of the camera.

I noticed that too. This is a doll pose seen from time to time, but has been moderately troublesome to execute on older bodies without modification or creative composition. Volks "solved" that somewhat by adding a curved neck stem to DDS and DDIII, but to take advantage of it you need to pull the head up about a few mm, further elongating it. DDII to the left.

Hey guys, quick question for you all. I'm really into sewing, woodwork and general prop and costume production.

Do any of you think there'd be any profit to be made in taking commissions for clothes and furniture specifically for dolls?

To give a rough estimate of how much I could work for, I'd easily be able to produces dresses and the like for $7-$15 depending on the complexity. I could make something like Sora's rabbit for about $15 and pillows and photons would be around $5.

Armchairs and other wooden constructions would be a little more but I could easily afford to sell ones with fairly intricate designs at around $30, assuming I'm to make them out of oak.

There are no guides for putting on clothes, but it's mostly self-explanatory. Since dolls are not as flexible as we are, removing the arms and head may help in some situations

Staining is an oft discussed topic for new doll owners. Heat and humidity are the two big factors that accelerate sublimation of dyes. Deeply saturated fabrics like red, black or blue are the most likely to stain. if you choose to dress in those colors don't store your doll in them for extended periods of time.

Cleaning is not an issue, these dolls don't really get dirty. Maybe dusty like any other object in your house.

Don't forget that with perspective shots and different-sized props in the foreground and background, you can create "in camera" effects.
