Alright, I'm going to explain in detail why this is comedy gold and you're going to laugh, you got that?

The first panel, the all important set-up. There's some cookies on that there table right? Chen sees that shit and she knows she wants some. You can tell by the way she's peering over the table with that look of desire in her eyes. Her tail is even pointed upwards. But there's a problem, that sign says not to eat those cookies. Chen has some real cognitive dissonance going on now. She's going to need to evaluate herself and the situation to decide what to do.

In the second panel Chen begins listening to her id, represented by a devil Chen. The trident, horns, and bat wings make it obvious. Clearly that little devil must be telling her to give in to her desires, to do what feels good, and just go for it. What's the worst that could happen anyway?

Third panel. That innocent face and halo indicate Chen is now dealing with the ego and superego. Now comes the appeal from her morality. The tension is building as Chen has heard both arguments and must soon make a choice. What will Chen do?

The final panel has arrived. The shocking conclusion, the final act. It all ends here. We see Chen peering over the table once again, now with her evil side doing the same. However, she now has a smug smirk on her face. She's going to eat those fucking cookies, and nothing will stop her. What's more is her supposed good side wants in on the action. This indicates that Chen never had a strong sense of morality at all. This could be referring to her being a cat, or more likely, her childish nature.

Now laugh.

That's not it all. The punch line is that Chen and both of her consciouses can agree to continue staring hungrily at the cookies. Was the punchline of that post that you spent so much time analyzing it and still didn't get the joke? If so the comic must have been deeper and more subjective than I thought.

How so? He's obviously not understanding the humor and is trying to be witty about the perceived lack of it. Unfortunately, he's not understanding it because he's lacking a sense of humor, and the same lack is quite an obstacle when someone is trying to be funny, so his attempt falls flat.

Please, that comic is completely devoid of humor compared to a 4koma that has had dialogue removed. I'd go into further detail, but I honestly believe we're operating on different levels of hilarity here.

So, how about an actual explanation?

Humor is based on an element of surprise. You laugh because what you encounter is unexpected in some way. There's more to it, as not all that's surprising is laugh-inducing, obviously, but that's the gist of it. Now that you're aware of this, on to the comic. The first three panels provide a buildup: first you see Chen in a situation where she's seemingly under a dilemma. Then the two archetypal symbolic representations of her "good" and "bad" sides appear. With such a buildup, you expect some kind of punchline or resolution in the fourth panel. Yet it never arrives. What you assume are manifestations of Chen's psyche aren't interested in struggling to convince her to make a decision. All your expectations are shattered and you will not get a resolution. You're free to wonder and theorize what was actually happening, but generally you stop upon realization that you have simply been tricked; that's the whole point and there's nothing more to it.

This technique, overblowing expectations to lead to an unexpectedly mundane or otherwise flat resolutions, is something bkub is utilizing expertly in many of his strips. Bkub's punchlines aren't merely flat, they're seemingly completely joke-breaking - either exceedingly cheesy or completely orthogonal to the buildup. The moment you perceive his genius is the moment when you realize how far you've been led astray.

Of course a joke that's been explaned is not funny anymore, so I won't tell you to laugh now. In fact, if you didn't find it funny originally, you'll never understand what it's like to laugh at it. But you should have now at least realized that, yes, even if the humor eluded you so far, it's there.

Here's the same technique at work in what's one of my favorite bkub strips. The buildup leads you to expect a joke about Cirno's incompetence and stupidity. But bkub is above such simplistic humor. While Cirno is indeed playing poker comically poorly, it utimately doesn't matter, Daiyousei is just that good/lucky at the game for some reason. The absence of a joke is the joke itself. Finally, you realize you're the one being laughed at; you and your dirty secondary humor turning characters into bland stereotypes.

Chen can flip things and Ran tells her to go flip more things, but another catgirl (Orin) rivals her as illustrated in the final panel.

Of course that's blunt breakdown, you can't portray the humour in this manner, so you have to get the joke for yourself.

Have a pleasant day.

While the previous examples were based on an overblown buildup leading to a flat conclusion, this strip does the exact opposite. We have Ran making obviously too big of a deal out of Chen's silly and childish fascination with a mundane skill. In more serious works, you'd expect Chen to come to a disillusioning realization, in comedic ones, you'd probably see some comical side-effects of her silly behavior. What you didn't expect is learning that flipping things can, actually, be kind of a big deal. You are now waiting for some kind of follow-up or at least an explanation, but it'll never arrive, the strip is over and the punchline have already been shown. You've been toyed with once again.

Joke's on you, in my mind, I know exactly how it goes on. They battle it out Hokuto no Ken style.
*Chen is upside down*
> You have already been flipped!
> No Orin. It is you, who has already been flipped.
*Orin falls on her head*
