Mechwarrior Online looks promising.

I play(ed) PSO2 and I can't really consider it an MMO. There's hardly anything to do except running the same repetitive quests over and over, it's not open world, there's no endgame, etc. Coming from something like FFXI it feels like a depressing mini-game analogue of an MMO.

PSO2 feels painfully incomplete, sadly.

Beyond that, the gameplay can't even hold up to what I would have considered a lower-tier game (even though PSO2 ended up similarly free-to-play, it feels like it should be above it). The gameplay is so painfully inferior to both ends of the ARPG spectrum with Monster Hunter (retail) on the slower end and Vindictus (Nexon F2P) on the faster end; they outshine PSO2 by so much that it's a bit sad.

DFO was always a point of contention for me, while the combat is great fun (especially Battle Mage, which I mostly played) the low points such as p2p lag and the unbalanced PvP/ineffectiveness of some classes in PvE made me not stick with it for long.

As for Guild Wars 2 I'm pretty much done with Guild Wars. I played the original long before Factions came out and loved playing Minion Master Necromancer and Mesmer, but both of these classes have been changed and nerfed horribly, so much so that they're barely the same classes any more and Guild Wars 2 will only make it worse.

Yes but that's all there are to most MMOs these days, you level up, hit level cap, then just run raids or PvP. Players who don't have a lot of time to play aren't the problem. It's the normals that are the problem. They just treat MMO as if it's something to beat. This is especially a problem with the nolifers who play 15 hours a day and feel they need to hardcore-mode everything, get to the finish line as soon as possible, then complain they're bored and cry for the developers to wave more carrots in front of them to chase - not really improving the game, as it causes previous endgame content to become obsolete.

Casual players are a red herring and I don't understand why they are looked down upon so severely. Are we to look down on the salaryman or the busy student or housewife who only gets one or two hours a night to escape from the gloom of reality to live a more fulfilling life online as a knight or a magical girl or an interstellar trader? I think we shouldn't mix up casual with "wants to beat the game ASAP".

By all means make progression slow, but it shouldn't be the be all and end all of the game. Were progression linked to XP reward rather than time spent subscribing, I think EVE's model of having hundreds of skills which you can typically only max out a relatively small number of would be a good one in any MMO. Not having a clearly defined endgame is desirable too, I believe. The whole spending a few weeks/months getting to max level then spending eternity just grinding for marginally better gear is an outdated paradigm.

I like parts of both types of these.

I very much dislike MMOs "on rails" as seen in WoW and most other new MMOs that drag you along a thin line from first login until max level. I don't really care if it takes ages and ages to level, real-time skill training (EVE) is pretty okay with me too. I think the most important thing for me is freedom, the kind of approach you see in games like Ultima Online and EVE, and to lesser extent as in older games like Everquest and Asheron's Call which simply dropped you in the world and let you fend for yourself and figure out how to survive and progress.

That reminds me, time to see if ArcheAge ended up being terrible or something to continue anticipating.

>> No.9555089

>>9554575
In a lot of mmo's, what you do before endgame doesn't matter. The "real" game starts once you hit max level. If players are getting bored with the endgame that fast, it just means it's a bad game and probably won't last long (tera).

>Casual players are a red herring and I don't understand why they are looked down upon so severely
Casual players that can only play 1 to 2 hours a night are fine, but it seems like it's always these type of players that complain the most. They can't or don't want to put in the time and effort so they complain. The developers listen to their complaints and make it easier until the challenge of the game is gone. If you can only play one hour a night that's fine, but don't think you should have all the things a player who plays more has. There's a difference between the casual players who enjoy the game but just don't have the time, and the casuals who want everything to be easy.

>The whole spending a few weeks/months getting to max level then spending eternity just grinding for marginally better gear is an outdated paradigm.
Traditionally, mmo's are like this. Some people hate the grind and others love it. FFXI was my favorite mmo and it was known for being a grind, at least before they made everything easy mode. It had a great community and maybe one reason why is because it kept the, for lack of a better term, "casuals" away. The players who would rather have everything easy mode went to play WoW, and I think WoW is known for having a pretty shitty community.

All these new mmo's try to appeal to both the hardcore and casual players and fail at it.

That's why warcraft and many other games have become much more casual. There are lots of players who cannot stand spending an hour of playtime per level. The great majority of gamers will only play a game for 75 hours at most before quitting for a different game.

It's why a lot of newly released games only have a certain amount of depth in them and no more. It's a shame that mmorpg have so many short term type of players but that's the grazing mentality nowadays with most players.

>This, along with the fact that they're more solo-oriented and have few mechanics to encourage socialization make them just another game which happens to be online,

Some games like Warcraft have a mix of areas for both group and solo players. But of course that only creates happenstance socialization when you wander around asking individuals to make a party with you.

>you'd get the same lack of sense of community from some random online FPS with a lobby.

Some games have a vibrant mix of in-game events, guilds, arena teams, and parties that allow others to join. Even if you solo in some events, you might join another party or be asked by one to join just to help the party complete the tasks sooner or more safely since completing the task is more important than worrying about dilution of loot drops. I hate that I don't get that fun sensation of killing things in most MMOs. In RO, I'd run into a pile of enemies and murder them all with sweet moves. In other MMOs that don't use the 1ON1 vs enemies system, it still takes a long time to fight or the enemies just like fall over and die. In RO they'd burst into reese's pieces and stuff. It was fun to fight and satisfying to kill them. Also the ability to spam potions and the fact that it didn't take forever to kill non MVPs and wait for skill cooldowns and all that shit.

I think I like Mabi combat not only because of its old system that rewarded skill with killing things much more powerful than yourself but because of the knock back you can do and the way EVERYTHING in Mabi blinds you. So if you hit a full set of things on screen with a crit you get something like the screen goes white with critical hit effect and everything flies away from you and you level up making this other white light flash.

Mabi's blinding you is probably the thing that will stick with me most, even after forgetting about food cutscenes, stripping succubuses, all the minigames, getting exp for doing basically anything, being violated by ship rats, flirting with (incredibly hot) NPCs, beating the shit out of every inanimate object and trees, and burning everything in campfires which also gives you exp for some reason. Above all, I will never forget the first time I met Fleta.

>I was thinking of making an alchemist for throwing potions, but I don't think I can handle the autism grind.

I felt no "autism grind", so it must be you. And 2 hours per day of play is not autism but that is very short in terms of mmorpg. As a measure of how good you are, how long did you take to get your novice level 1 to be a merchant? My time is approx 12 minutes from login to solving the merchant job change quest (proven). My biggest problem is "move out of my way ya slowpoke".

Lackadaisical players are just that.

IRO's "prince" is able to get a novice level 1 to transcend to champion in 12 hours (proven). He removed the documentation for fear it would spawn cookie cutter copiers. He did that solo without help from other players. It's another thing I like about RO in that there are so many ways to play and improve, but people just never see or understand how because they only have "brute force" thinking styles. He's way better than me. sigh

In several days (2 hr/day), if you try, you can get a novice from level 1 to merchant that is soloing with cart revolution at sograt desert. But the way you worded it, you are a solo and not group player. If you are able to have friends in the game, then you can level up with them. But if you are the angsty soloist casual, then people will not party with you more than once before giving up on you.

>I wanted a MMO where I could save people, so I bought GW2 because it has dynamic events and surely there will be people having a tough time on their own.

You can play a "priest" type char then in established mmo's and wander around randomly helping people. That's one way to find parties or at least get more people to know about your existence. That way, in the future, you come across them in the city looking for more party members, it's no problem to join since they already had an introduction of sorts.

>I will just sacrifice myself for everyone I meet.

If you are not joking, that is a terrible way to enjoy a game. You cannot play and then expect people people to be grateful and shower you with praise and rewards. mmorpg are full of players trying to obtain a slice of pie for themselves. You should too without being a doormat.

Pictured is an IRO ragnarok online migao (increase soil) farm. There's a semi-trick to make them multiply faster (it actually is part of their official nature to do so slowly).

I want to leap just in time to save a fellow adventurer from being delivered a fatal blow. If I can't protect anyone or feel worthy in real life, I will just do it in video games. As long as I find it enjoyable I think there is nothing wrong with that, though "sacrifice" was probably too extreme of a term. I'm not going to die needlessly, I'm just going to support my allies as best as I can.

>You'd need Ulillillia levels of autism to grind an alchemist to 99

There are ways to avoid boring autist mode. Don't be a chicken. Be willing to spend zeny and pots. Be a skillful player and not brute force only. Party. Level up with homun. Cart Rev with homun as focal point.

I used to level alchs before Renewal with homunculus doing the killing. If the area was too dangerous for one alch to survive, I would have 2. If two was not enough, I would bring in 3 or 4 total with 3 of the alchs there only for their homunculus which I would program separatelly from the one being leveled. I have a LUA set of plugin routines that I use for that purpose to form a "fortress" of protection around the alchemist that is leveling. If the alch stays alive, then the homun (much tougher) will remain alive. Since they are all friended to each other in code and party share is off, the one homun that is attacking gets to share the exp with its master.

With the alchs in a good location, I then have my main char priest lure mobs over to the homun for killing. When I get close, I hide and dump the mobs onto the homun. To protect the priest, all the homun also have code set to protect the priest and you see a huge storm of magic bolts or lightning clouds sizzling the mobs away from the priest. Otherwise, the 3 of the 4 homun remain next to the alchs to protect their bodies and don't attack the monsters.

Pictured is alch in magma dungeon level 2. The monsters focus on homun (clip of hiding) and then cart rev on the clustered mobs. Autism is picking up loot. Don't pick up unless its a card, but move on to more mobs. You avoid autist feeling by keeping things moving. If you're desperate for whites, pick those up.

>homun ... aren't available in Classic yet, I think

Then it's cart revolution in orc dungeon until you get up a few levels and loots before heading to the desert. If I had a priest, I'd try better EXP places than those. Without a party, solo merchants level a bit, then farm loot rich for zeny for potions, then go back to leveling.

At some point, your merchant should get leveling gear together. Classic server prolly not a good place for that since underdeveloped economy and no friends or allies to borrow a really good leveling weapon from.

My alchs, geared up, would go many places including seals which are quite killable as long as you know how to walk and cart rev at the same time. Move seals along the corner by hammock/table and cart rev. Only a little bit and they are all dead since they are held there by the walls and my cart rev gets to register all the revolutions as hits. In open terrain, the amount of damage is useless for sealing. A lot of times, I had buffs from friendly priests & sages, so that was another luxury that "solo angsty unfriendly" players wouldn't get since sages & priests don't buff asses except they might buff the ass in the picture....

Before homun, many alchemists would be leeched at mummies. Is that the case where you are? If you're short on zeny, offer a leeching service there. There's only one specific gear your priest needs for killing AM and it might even be earned by alch partying with others.

I get what you're saying. It's like MMOs are single-player games played with other people. Everyone goes through the "single-player story mode" (leveling-up), and then they run the same raids every week.

MMOs should instead feel like massive worlds inhabited by people, where interaction between players actually mattered, and is encouraged. Instead we get games where everyone rushes through their "single-player" experience so they can do the same end-game content week after week to get some gear. It could be a single-player game with multiplayer lobbies and it wouldn't change a thing. MMOs could be special but developers don't seem to care.

>is there a lot of environmental interaction?
Yes, PvE (player versus environment) is the mainstay of the game. While there are many types of PvP, the PvE is where most people play. The War of Emperium despite being a major activity, actually involves only a minority of the players. Some players make a special time just to login during WoE to do PvE since players in WoE are not competing in PvE.

>Can you sit on things that are not the ground
You can sit on chairs when you see them. Boxes and even some things can be stood upon. There was a sneaky thin "wagon tongue" you could walk upon to get inside the wagon (bet most players never walked there).

>...interact with other players beyond clipping through them

Most games don't allow hostile player interaction unless in PvP. Otherwise, you could impede them, block a one-person wide opening, or worse yet, run up to them, PUSH THEM INTO the boss monster in a fight, into a warp, or off the bungie jump tower to their death.... You implicitly argue for it as a benefit to occur everywhere, but I see that as a trolling feature. If you can figure out how to stop trolling 100% forever and perfect, then let's have physical interaction in RO. Otherwise, every reasonable player says no way can it be allowed.

The problem with this, is like in the real world, some people will be better than others and that will make the lesser ones mad and ragequit. Everyone wants to be the bestest hero and giving them all the same experience is the only way to do that, which in turns leads to that single player game feeling. That and ever though you claim to want to be part of a world, most people don't like talking to strangers and would rather grind by themselves or with friends.

Do you want to gladly help newbies who come up to you begging for help and gold?
Do you want to party with randoms and lose in dungeons?
Do you want to have content that requires multiple people to beat?
Do you want to have to depend on people playing other classes to fight effectively?
Do you want to never be able to obtain (non event) things that other better players flaunt at every chance?

If the answer to any of those things are no, then you don't really want to play a MMO either. You just want to sit in a world with a bunch of people and watch them go by.

You are asking for features suitable for a PVP everywhere game world. Hugging another player such as a party's priest during a fight would kill that party off. So that is not allowed.

You would probably say YOU just want to hug and carry other people. But if this feature is available, it will be abused by angsty trolls who are jealous or want to revenge stalk someone. So, your hugging and picking up other chars is not allowed.

In one place in the game where player body interaction is allowed, someone abused it by filling the spot with their body and others could push him out of the spot. Why not cure the problem by allowing players to push others out of a spot? Well, players idle in the game and you know what will happen if you allow those idling chars to be moved around by other players.... Horror.

Such features are only good in a game that allows friendly fire, pvp mandatory everywhere, etc. I refuse to play in such a game.

If you want to hug other players so much, well, that sounds kind of gay already. Unwanted hugging at Anime Expo has been used year after year as a trolling feature to ruin cosplay costumes yet still have a plausible excuse of "oops, didn't mean to wreck it or smear food grease on it".

This player did it pure without store items or food. It evidently qualified her for membership in some korean "i soloed baphomet" clan which had over 1300 members last I checked. You have to record it from login screen to mvp ending and submit the recording as proof.

>...that single player game feeling.

While there are "forever alone" players in online games, there are lots of sociable people too.

>most people don't like talking to strangers and would rather grind by themselves or with friends.

Most elite players have that mindset of deliberately not being helpful to competitors. So it's natural for them to stick to their own group of other elite players who might not even be friends but people mutually banding together for monster killing.

>Do you want to gladly help newbies who come up to you begging for help and gold?
I never give money, but I will give spare gears if they actually can use it and won't sell it.

>Do you want to party with randoms and lose in dungeons?

They don't lose if I'm there as I'm competent and I won't party randoms that are total idiots like level 1 fighting the level 9999 boss. At times, I join in just to make sure they don't fail and decline all drops because I enjoy seeing others play nicely and having fun. YOU might even be that random I helped since I often deliberately go looking for randoms to help when waiting for a boss to repop.

>Do you want to have content that requires multiple people to beat?

All good games try to encourage partying instead of soloing, even for lower level monsters.

>Do you want to have to depend on people playing other classes to fight effectively?

Some monsters are designed that way in the top 5 commercially successful mmorpg that have lasted over 5 years.

>Do you want to never be able to obtain (non event) things that other better players flaunt at every chance?

I feel no need to be Kirito or Asuna or self-insert with flaunting poses as in the picture.

Ragnarok Online is F2P and is the only major mmorpg that doesn't have either a crippled client (missing features in the client) or cripples you in the game if you don't pay. While it has an in-game shop, it is not a pay-to-win type game, so it's way better than private servers where you pay-to-win with all those "donation" gears with super powerful features.

Ragnarok Online Official Site:
http://playragnarok.com

Player-Run Info/Intro Site:
http://irowiki.org

Without paying, you can get to level 99, wear all gears for your job class, travel, gain skills, enter arenas, play in-game mini-games (ho ho ho), compete in many in-game events open to everyone, etc. There are a few in-game events that use items from the shop, but those don't get in your way of advancing your char.

The in-game shop is used for things like buying a name change, sex change, moving your char to a different account name in case you happened to create all your chars on just one account, hats, convenience items, safer upgrade raw materials, bonus leveling items to help make things safer or faster.

In one game I play, that is part of one way to check for botting.... So, if you go to another game, you might have the same mindset that if your chars keep getting random interactions, it may be that players think you are a bot and some people are insulted (or afraid) by that.

mmos are pretty much all terrible because they have no depth. everything is based on grinding in order to make your numbers bigger. just look at the "hardcore" community for wow. they hate how the game is being made more accessible to casual players, as if content somehow becomes less fun because more people are doing it. the truth is that they don't even like playing and their only enjoyment comes from having better stats and seeming "elite."

Well, Warcraft is not good for 4channers since that is a double-pay system. You have to keep buying new clients all the time, and on top of the new client purchases each year, you have to pay subscription fees too. And a lot of times, you have to have massive downloads of client updates of which a lot of it seems to be DRM by the way it runs and patches.

The only major mmorpg that is genuinely free and uncrippled is Ragnarok Online.

Other so called free to play games you still have to buy the client software and updates. It's free to play after you pay for it. So no thanks.

The Grand Company missions which have been released in the more recent patches are fucking intense.
It's probably too late to recommend anyone trying the game as it's going to be 2.0 soon and many of the game's content will be completely wiped (besides character/ item/ achievement data).
But for those who gave up playing before it went pay to play and had some high level classes, I'd certainly recommend paying for the cheap sub just to see what has changed and to try some of these harder quests.
I'll be working on the final boss with my LS soon. It apparently took them 17 consecutive hours to beat it, so I'll be looking forward to that.

I didn't associate 4channers with being poor. For the greatest number of 4channers to participate together, the online game should be free to play. That doesn't mean poor.

I think that is a valid approach and it doesn't exclude anyone at 4chan simply because they don't want to spend money on a game. If anyone has aversion to the poor label, it's because in the USA, the republican party has managed to demonize the word "poor" as meaning you are incompetent and tries hard to associate it with being liberal which is another demonized word in the usa.

Only you went since there was no agreement to go there as a group. And that place is not truly F2P due to pay-to-win (P2W). A P2W place design has the game set up to induce players to spend money as the first priority and game design and game mechanics are 2nd and 3rd place. In a good F2P game, the game design and game mechanics are 1st and 2nd with the in-game shopping trailing those in importance.
