"My best effort won't be enough, so why bother in the first place?"

These are not the words of a defeatist. In this world of ours, not caring is the most logical course of action.

I don't think you mean logical.
I think you mean practical.

Not expending effort when you know nothing will come of it is both logical and practical, from the perspective of the individual.

Logic does not dictate any new courses of action.

Fact 1: I care.
Fact 2: Nothing happens.
Logic: My care achieves nothing.
Practicality: I should stop caring.

You can't ignore the place of logic in the decision making process. It is very much a part of things in this scenario.

I find caring has a very strange payout structure.

It's kind of like a slot machine.

That is assuming your logical conclusion (ie: your caring achieves nothing) is actually correct.
By the way, if you agree to this conclusion, then please don't call your way of life non-defeatist.

Furthermore, even if this conclusion is reached logically (and correctly), the course of action itself cannot be logical unless you have a pre-set goal that can only be reached via a single route. But you are still in the process of choosing your goal. Therefore, whatever you decide upon cannot in itself be logical.

If we agree to change the word logical in the OP to sensible, can we stop quibbling over semantics?
