I use ReNoise which is free or $70 if you want the ability to render to disk. I used to run audio out straight to my mic input and record that way. It wasn't FLAC quality, but it was nice. I've been using it for half a year now and love it, but since I was coming straight from a sequencer on my DMG it was easier for me to pick up. I tried using Cubase and some other programs and couldn't bother with them for more than a few days.

A work in progress I made yesterday/today

You might want to look into color theory, I think purplekecleon's tutorial is a nice starting place.
Use a darker version of your starting color plus some blue or purple (depending on if it's a cold or warm color).
Don't use the blur tool to shade, and don't make it too smooth.
You can use a brush with some gaps in it and scale it down, paint a bit. Then use the color picker on that ( I hope that makes sense).
Then paint over the spot until you get a nice shade that blends a bit. Try to avoid a gradient like effect.
Decide your light source first.

I hope that helps a little bit. Using a brush with gaps in it will help offset the missing pen pressure feature of the mouse. You could try doing it with setting your brush to a lower opacity, but I haven't tried that out yet.

YM3812, eh? That's a 2OP chip, right?

There are a couple of neat game soundtracks and demo tunes for the old SoundBlaster/Adlib, but I'm a bigger fan of the 4OP Yamaha chips used in Japanese computers and arcade games. I guess it is cool that you can actually own the hardware without breaking the bank with an old PC like that. I wish you the best of luck with your tracking - keep us posted.

2OP, as in "2 Operator/Oscillator FM synthesis" (carrier wave and modulator wave). As opposed to 4OP, which allows for much more complex synthesis.

In general, the Sound Blaster and Adlib cards popular in the West used chips from Yamaha's 2OP FM family (including the OPL2/YM3812), while Japanese systems used chips from the 4OP family. Early arcade games (like Fantasy Zone that I linked) used 2OP synths, while later ones usually had 4OP synths with PCM for drums. Compare the songs I linked early to these 4OP tracks:

Well, I can't draw to save my life, but usually when you see character design in artbooks/extras/whatever you see a lot of different sketches, so you probably should draw her 2 o 3 times more.

>There will be some changes in the design of the underclothes and hair
The drillhair always give some "royalty feeling", so its good for a noble. If that's really the underclothes they are fine too, but she must wear something over it, a queen shouldn't look too lewd, unless is for some hentai work, of course.

I do agree that drills do feel very royal.

Clothes wise, there's the coat, drape thing, with a heavy feathered collar. And then open at the front for the under clothes. I wanted to emphasize her figure while at the same time doing something different from before. Something revealing and sexy but not slutty. So i'm still going through some references.

I am really confused. I want to learn how to draw properly, so I've been asking around a lot of different places, and everyone has a different opinion.
Some say that using the mouse is a complete waste of time because it doesn't help develop muscle memory. Others say it doesn't matter because a good artist can draw with a mouse without any problems. And then there's some who say "just draw whatever you want by yourself and you will learn all the shortcuts naturally" (well, that certainly didn't help CWC)

For some reason I'm starting to get the feeling that whenever someone asks "how do I learn to draw?", a lot of people who don't actually know how to draw will chip in and voice their opinion. Trying to learn by myself feels like stumbling in the dark with no sense of direction, but I missed the deadline and couldn't sign up for the art classes at my local college this semester.

her name is kubie. it is the year 3120, she is the daughter of a middle class family who is descended from viking scholars who invented the original rubiks cube before even before rubiks did. the cube was used as a catalyst for magic spells which the vikings used to plunder and raid and power their simple boats to sail through even solid ice and terrible storms. many viking warlords sought the use of the mystical cube but the scholars could only create one as it required lost alien technology from a billion years ago. eventually greed and jealousy ultimately destroyed the vikings and they converted to christianity and the cube was lost.

2000 years later kubie found the cube locked in a small metal box in a cave somewhere near her house. she blew it open with a space laser gun (which exists in the future and everyone has one like all chinese people know cunt fu) and found the cube. she has no idea the power she holds in her hands but it is so great she could change the fate of the world, no, the universe.

Samefag here. I started to read Loomis as someone suggested, but I don't understand.

What do experienced artists actually mean when they tell people to draw from life and learn anatomy? They're not implying that only anatomically correct figures can look good. There's something else that makes bad drawings stand out. You can tell when something's been drawn with anatomically incorrect parts intentionally, and when it's not. What is it? What techniques are people actually supposed to learn by speed drawing from life?

The answer is stylization. By understanding the fundamentals of building the human body, you can start "bending the rules" of it, changing parts to make them more attractive while also simplifying them. This is what anime does to your big-titted, wasp-waisted, wide-hipped girls while not making you scratch your head going "wait that shit doesn't work that way!". Generally, at least.

Beyond that, gesture drawing from life makes it easier to develop natural poses that aren't strained or forced, because you will understand how the human body flows. This can also be exaggerated with stylization once you understand it well.

Why do people keep saying this? This isn't true. There are some actually good artists but most either copied from some other artist and then got better or else look like they don't even know the word anatomy. Even the basic anime head generally ignores anything about the actual shape of a head. It's one of the reason faces look weird when people try to draw "anime style" but use anatomically correct heads. Provided, most can draw a body that you recognize as a human body, but calling it a stylization is a bit of a stretch in most cases. It's bad but it's cute/cool enough to ignore it generally.

>>9547836
>>9547785
>There's something else that makes bad drawings stand out.
Lack of symmetry
Lack of depth or foreshortening
Incorrect joints
Flat look and lack of shading

There's also some inexplicable "lack of effort" that shows in creative things when the person wasn't trying their hardest, but I haven't figured out what that is physically, yet.

>> No.9548130

>>9548072
>Even the basic anime head generally ignores anything about the actual shape of a head.
That's exactly what a stylization is. You still know it's a head, of course, but it most definitely does not resemble an actual human's skull once you try to analyze it. I just think your threshold for what qualifies as "stylization" doesn't extend very far. Anime styles as a whole have been reworked and redone for decades to hammer out all the 'ugly' things that are problems in 3D. All of it goes back to understanding the human body in the first place.

Old drawfag here to ramble on about this.

The thing is that this knowledge gives you certain... boundaries, you could say. There are certain things that you can get away with and certain things you can't get away with in stylisation.

Let's take anime eyes for example. You can get away with exaggerating size, however, you can't get away with exaggerating negative space with eyes (that is, eyes that are too close or far away from each other). Even in anime drawing, the eye distance that looks good is (relative to the eye size) the same as in realistic drawing and real life.

Anyone who has studied anatomy and drawing from life knows this kind of "boundaries" through their study; they've experimented with real life and noticed what kind of deviations from the "rules" of the body look the worst, because they've made those mistakes with realistic drawing. They've learnt the proportions of the body, how far joints bend, how light and shadow act on 3-dimensional forms - all these things are the same in stylised drawing. Just because it's anime doesn't mean long torsos or over-twisted necks look good, and the real masters of anime are those who know which rules must be adhered to, even in anime, and which ones can be stylised.

To be continued...

>> No.9548193

>>9548184
Continuation:
These rules are very hard to learn through stylised drawings only, because most people aren't immediately able to spot rules ("oh, this artist's eyes look good because he/she draws them with this amount of distance relative to the eye size!") from 2d immediately. You can learn them that way too, depending on how easily you spot and understand these kind of visuo-spatial rules and relations, but it's a slower and less effective way. It's quite much easier to spot why a realistic drawing looks eerily off, and that makes it a more effective way to learn these boundaries.

This is why it's worth pursuing classical anatomy/art study, in my humble opinion anyway.

>> No.9548207

>>9548130
>That's exactly what a stylization is.

If stylization means completely ignoring everything about something, then why would you criticize DA level artists for saying something is their style when it's clearly bad? Why would you learn proper anatomy to ignore every single thing about it?

What I don't understand, essentially, is saying you can't ignore everything until you've learned everything.

But drawing stuff like that is so boring. Personally, I don't care if I end up drawing like ZUN. I just want a consistent style that looks more or less like I want it to.

>> No.9548241

>>9548207
...but you're not ignoring everything. That would be stupid and would defeat the purpose of learning it in the first place. Like >>9548184 >>9548193 said, there are boundaries that apply to both. You cannot bend a joint 270 degrees and expect it to seem correct just because it's anime.

>why would you criticize DA level artists for saying something is their style when it's clearly bad?
I never said anything about that. If it's bad, it's bad. You can tell who is exaggerating a form well or not with a glance, regardless of style.

>>9548223
You have to draw boring shit if you want your fun shit to look good quickly. You'll struggle a lot less if you suck it up and study.

>> No.9548306

Well, one thing I think is that while life drawing is a more effective way, it may not be very appealing for beginners. It's a bit intimidating in that your mistakes are obvious and it can make you feel powerless, and if anime drawing is your goal it may be hard to see the concrete benefit you're getting from those disappointments.

And at that stage, I don't think it's bad to do whatever you find the most motivating. You can study many of these things to some degree through anime drawing as well, and with very inexperienced people just drawing enough so that you learn to draw consistently and coordinate your hand will form a good basis for art skills.

What I think is important is not to dismiss realistic drawing just because it seems boring right now, because it really is an effective way, and when you get to a certain level of skill, or maybe when you try it out, it's actually quite exciting as well. But go ahead and motivate yourself first, build up some skill, and soon enough it will probably sound a lot more appealing when you feel through drawing anime you're facing a wall in your anatomy learning and so on.

>> No.9548328

>>9548193

Thanks for the insightful post. I'm not who asked, but I have question too.
You say that when a person draws real things, they'll learn the boundaries of things to make things look nice, and when they move to stylized drawing, they can bend some of those boundaries to their favor. So here's my question. How will that person know which boundaries are flexible and which ones are not?
Take the eye-thing for instance. A person can learn the proper eye size and distance from each other and position on the head. But how will we know it's the eye size but not eye distance that's flexible?

Experimentation. Try it. If eyes are too close or too far apart, it looks wonky, more often than not. There's a larger margin of error when drawing in an anime style, but it is often immediately apparent when drawing a face from life. The moment it's off, it hits that Uncanny Valley look. These 'general' rules about the human body are the ones that apply to both anime and real life fundamentally.

I could add that in realistic drawing, you have roughly different types of mistakes with drawing humans: anatomy mistakes and likeness mistakes. Eye size, for example, is a likeness mistake (as long as the mistake is within certain boundaries) rather than an anatomy one, as there is much variation in eye size between people. When you draw eyes too large or small, as long as the mistake isn't that large it just looks less like the person you are drawing. Meanwhile drawing a too long distance between eyes makes the drawing uncanny, because apart from rare cases, this is pretty much constant in human faces. That's an anatomy mistake, not a likeness one.

You learn that the things that alter likeness, like eye size, can be used to stylise whereas the things that alter whether or not anatomy looks correct and human, like distance between eyes, should rather be kept in realistic boundaries.

>>9548353
I actually thought of CLAMP. Some artists do use their freedom to exceed the boundaries set by realism (you also see a lot of this in modern art), but well, there's a reason CLAMP's style isn't praised for it's awfully tall men.
