Gensokyo is in it's golden ages. What are you talking about? Youkai only attack the outsiders, and even then, you can make it to the human village if you're lucky enough. You can also share your knowledge with a youkai that thinks about attacking you, and you might be able to fool them. Now for beasts, you can just bring some kind of food so you can leave it to it and run away.
This myth that Gensokyo is a grimdark horrible land is completely nullified in Akyuu's monologue about Gensokyo's current status. It's currently a peaceful place to live in, and youkai even drink with humans on night, etc. You only die in Gensokyo if you're foolish enough.
