this is the worst map of gensokyo I've ever seen. misty lake no in the way of hakurei shrine, sanzO river, isn't the nameless hill supposed to be by the garden of the sun? and isn't the geyser to the underground supposed to be behind reimu's shrine? and since when are muedzuka and higan just down the block, not to mention makai?

Yeah, but then he'd have to explain everything with each game and keep updating the map and actually make Gensokyo make sense in the literal, present, and cartographic sense rather than the mythic and metaphorical sense. Myths never have put much emphasis on proper mapmaking, and no two storytellers agree exactly on how the worlds orient themselves. Oh, there are broad similarities, but that's about it. And it's just not as important. Perhaps Gensokyo isn't even mappable. You get that in mythologies all the time, where the very earth is morphic and subject to change. Locations are just measured relative to each other, rather than absolutely. Not saying that's how it is, mind you.

Point is, making a map of Gensokyo isn't strictly necessary, at least not in the canon sense. People are more than welcome to make their own maps, but a canon map probably wouldn't do the series justice. Terry Pratchett always said that you can't map a sense of humor, so I'll paraphrase that and say that you can't map a sense of wonder.

In both character's story they both specify that they are looking for an island in the lake.
The Scarlet Devil Mansion was never infront of it.

Whoever made this map didn't play the games, or didn't really care on making the map accurate as most as they could have.
