8986476 No.8986476 [Reply] [Original]

>"Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. “Japan lost the war to the Americans,” he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. “Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, there’s no reasonable model of what an adult should be like.” The theory that Japan’s defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan. It is also a staple of popular cartoons, many of which feature a well-meaning government that turns out to be a facade concealing sinister and more powerful forces.

Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. “I don’t see any adults here in Japan,” he says, with a shrug. “The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldn’t have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But that’s what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children.” -Hideaki Anno

I want a Japanese trap boyfriend to look towards me, the American big daddy, for protection.

Fuck you. This is why I want to live in japan. the problem is children are also huge bullies, who will pick on you heavily for being different.

Thanks Jews.

He's right to a degree, after world war II we really shat all over their national sovereignty, but as per usual he acts like a smug pseudointellectual .

I honestly don't know how a guy who owes his all to "otaku culture" comes off as having so much ire for it.

Anno is correct! All hail Anno! Lord and master! Though that america part is something i would disagree with. Sounds like kid with daddy issues. But then again i could understand it.

clearly Anno has never been to a western convention like San Diego Comic Con, Dragon Con, or a renaissance faire. Grown men and women dressed up? Check. Acting like kids? Check. Or seen an animation studio. Seriously, we're a bunch of man children who, for limited amounts of time per day, will actually get our shit together. Every studio is like this.

America: Fucks given: zero.

>> No.8986558

So Anno confirms again to be the most self-deprecating otaku in the world

>> No.8986566

It would seem true that Japan lost a lot of edge after WWII and the westernization of their culture, but the problems Anno speaks of could apply to any country. Every country has embarrassing, ignorant people probably because everyone, in their hearts, are embarrassing, ignorant children. The link Anno is trying to make to WWII, I find, is largely illusory. At any rate, the result is a very unique entertainment subculture that I appreciate; whatever the reason, I'm glad it happened.

>honestly don't know how a guy who owes his all to "otaku culture" comes off as having so much ire for it.
He's clearly projecting, trying to find the boogeyman in charge of to his pain and inadequacies. Anno has a history of problems with himself and being associated with otaku, you can see it in all of his work. I feel he's trying to justify his work and who he is by blaming it on consequence. I don't really care though, at least he hasn't grown as cynical as Miyazaki. I love his work.

>> No.8986578

I don't see how being childish is a bad thing in this case.

His view of an adult seems to be someone who gives up the things they like in shame in order live up to the standards of those around them.

Fuck that. I'd rather be dead than become someone I'm not, or as he would say, "grow up."

I can sympathize with what he's saying. What he wants is balance and moderation. He isn't saying "don't look at porn or manga", he just doesn't want people to do this in public. I completely agree, it's embarrassing for me to see some western "otaku" making a fool out of his/herself.

>> No.8986656

>Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

>"Concerning the final line we adopted, I'm not sure whether I should say about it in fact. At last Anno asked me 'Miyamura, just imagine you are sleeping in your bed and a stranger sneaks into your room. He can rape you anytime as you are asleep but he doesn't. Instead, he masturbates looking at you, when you wake up and know what he did to you. What do you think you would say?' I had been thinking he was a strange man, but at that moment I felt disgusting. So I told him that I thought 'Disgusting.' And then he sighed and said, 'I thought as much.'"

This is very interasting, it is true one thoughs of an ideal point in life or the way one should behave within society and themselves changes as one inevitably grow older. But I yet to think we can compare this to extremes in wich Asian society takes this kind of things.

I personal don't care.

I don't really like how he lumps everyone into a stereotype. Along with that America it self has dug it self in a hole due to arrogant and trying to be the world police.

He is very naive in his assumption but the grass is not greener on the other side.

>> No.8986728

>>8986688
dat chart is beyond truth.

also, anno is just trying to vent out his disapproval due to how his own cultural views are dominating his imagination. If you were interpreting those same things, you would probably say something akin to immaturity of the nation. Again, this is an interpretation. There are more sides to it than just that.
