I want to believe that Yukari and Ran are mothers to an adorable daughter Chen, but all the canon says otherwise. Ran became Yukari's shikigami for the power up and Chen is a pet that Yukari doesn't take seriously. I bet Ran's pretty motherly to Chen though.

Lol, Yukari is the grandmother, Ran is the mother, and Chen is the daughter. It's pretty much accepted throughout the Japanese fandom and it makes more sense.

Yukari adopts Ran, Ran adopts Chen.

Yukari's not the most friendly youkai, and she's not really loving in the sense that humans consider loving. Ran is probably pretty motherly though. Chen is something of a troublemaker, but I'd like to believe she also loves Ran a lot.

The fanon makes things seem much more sugar and rainbows than they really are. That works for some people, but once you know the canon it's kind of hard to think of them as a loving family.

Yukari is a lazy master who enjoys messing around while a neglected Ran was forced to find another outlet for her affection, Chen. Ran however yearns for her masters attention and hates Reimu for easily achieving what she wants the most. Ran is a yandere who is very close to snapping.

Ran seems to sincerely care about Chen who in return looks up to her. Ran is nothing but a tool for Yukari, though.

Yukari: Bored she's been around for awhile and is very powerful to I doubt there's much that really interest her outside of strong opponents or Reimu and Yuyuko, because she's bored this is probably why she spends so much time sleeping.

Ran: obedient and helpful always looking up to her mistress very protective of both her and Chen but probably Chen more because she realizes Yukari would rarely if ever lose.


Chen: pretty much the same as Ran only looks up to Ran more, she probably has little actual interaction with Yukari her self but probably still respects her a great deal because Ran does.

Yukari = best 2hu

Chen is Chen, and very childish and innocent, looking up to Ran in a motherly way.

Ran looks up to Yukari as a role model, which is one reason I think she made Chen her shikigami, so she could be more like Yukari. They both have similar spellcards in game too, which adds to it. Ran also really respects Yukari, and works to take care of that of which Yukari shouldn't need to. Imagine a king or queen having to go be their own messenger, or something like that.

Yukari is wise, full of life experience, and likes to take it easy most of the time, though when things get serious, so does she. If the deal isn't big enough, she sends Ran to take care of it. She still does love Ran though, I can't say exactly how. Not in a motherly way, but a way that a professor could love her students (Don't think lewdly here).

yukari is sleeping most of the time, so she is absent
chen is outside playing in the apparitional village and other fun gensokyo places
ran is doing serious things, like training or taking care of yokai matters
it gets quite lively when yukari is awake, they go around doing things together, but this only happens once every handful of years, so most of the time it's a bit lonely

Yukari: Lazy, strong, powerful youkai. Doesn't take much seriously. Seemingly airheaded but secretly very sharp and wise.

Ran: Devout follower. Also wise but a bit crass. Watches the homestead and deals with matters she feels aren't up to Yukari's standards.

Chen: Youthful, naive. Is willing to do a lot to prove her worth. In training by Ran.

There's no family. A shikigami is a magically indentured slave. Chen gets treated a bit better than Ran due to her youth, but they are a mini-hierarchy of tyranny.
