I've gotten over my fanatic phase for this series though, in the beginning it was more about what I imagined the storyline was than what it actually ended up being. Canonfags ruined my fun I guess.

That's not even a tiny piece of the issue.

The issue is that I thought Medicine Sign "Galaxy in a Pot" means Eirin keeps an actual galaxy in a jar on her shelf. And she will chuck it in your face to get rid of you. And it doesn't even phaze you because that shit is really easy to dodge. I thought Kaguya's Impossible Requests were actual things you had to do for her or else you're fucked. Fuck, I thought Wriggle's Firefly Sign "Comet on Earth" actually called a comet to collide with Earth.

Basically, I thought the game graphics were purely symbolic and the actual battle was just straight up gods fighting with their full powers. Compared to that, the canonical interpretation of danmaku is _nothing_. Nothing at all. It doesn't matter if it stings when it hits you.

It's kind of a fun world to play around with and stretch to and beyond the limits. Presents a nice, possibly unique, blend of "this is canon" and "who the fuck knows?" that I find tantalizing.

I also find the porn and such to be tantalizing, but hey, who doesn't? There's so much of it there's bound to be at least one piece of it someone likes.

I'm no good at the games and honestly shmups don't interest me, so they're really only good for the music...
... which everyone else apparently does better, so whatever.

The characters have established personalities, which makes the porn very enjoyable. It's easier to imagine fucking them when I know their personalities. Also, the fact that they are all strong females makes it even hotter when they are dominated by dicks. And lastly, the diverse cast of characters means that I can masturbate to lolis, milfs, sadists, masochists, and more.

The games are fine, but get boring and frustrating after a long while for those who are unable to improve at them. But there is always a great feeling of excitement when playing a newly released Touhou game, even if it gets nowhere. ZUN makes interesting new characters and music, and then the fandom just expands it. The fandom develops the scenarios in many ways that the games don't, and develops the character personalities most of all. The non-porn doujinshi are really fun to read, and many circles have their own unique style which I love. Some really good doujin games based off of Touhou exist, too (不思議の幻想郷2 みらくる☆パーティー 妖々剣戟夢想 東方幻想魔録) and many others. And of course, the doujin music is wonderful. So many genres and so much of it that it's enough to last you a lifetime. Also, attending Flowering Night and Reitaisai are a lot of fun. Pretty much, the fandom is personally my favorite part of it, and I have yet to see any other fanbase as good, devoted, and productive as the Touhou fanbase.
