Tbh, Elfen Lied is possibly only there for nostalgia. It was the first anime I watched and was my gateway drug.

It didn't age that well, unfortunately, when I rewatched it a couple of years later. It seemed much better in my memory when I had less exposure, experience, and understanding, but I nevertheless have a soft spot in my heart for it.

Good taste comes from picking favorites that may not be the best, but have some sort of merit, charm, intrigue, or artistry that attracts a person to it, regardless of the overall quality.

Also, I think that by that time the viewer has already formed an opinion of Holo that it was acceptable to segue more into sequestered territories in order to stretch viewer's expectations. A repeat of season 1's formula would just be lacking.

Giant Robo OAV for the glorious soundtracks. The animation and cool characters aren't bad either. It took 6 years to produce six 50 minute episodes and you can feel and hear the quality in each one.

Simoun for how it focuses on themes about the modern war in the middle east except told through these unisex alien girls who pilot magical universe altering aircraft. That fictional setting was crazy, but I'll probably remember it until the end of my days. Soundtrack was really amazing too. Also it has /jp/'s favorite girl Aaeru.

Why do you think AB is so bad? It has high quality animation and a top notch OST. It was funny at times, and sad at times. The only weakness I see is in the story. Some of it doesn't make sense and the character development isn't all there, but they only had 13 episodes to work with. If they had 25 I feel like it could have been much better. Of course there are flaws with it, but I could name flaws in any anime. It certainly isn't "downright shit" like you call it, but it's not the best show in the world either and nobody is claming it is. I'm curious as to what anime you would recommend me?

Railgun's story is not its weakness. AB is supposed to be Maeda making a nakige in anime form. What instead happens is, you have no character development for most characters, a nonsensical plot, and 0 closure. You have people getting killed early in the series as a gag because you can't really die, but then in a later episode it's suddenly supposed to be serious that these people have died. It was an absurd show. The comedy was ok, the music was good, that's about it.

Not when something that was gag relief is all of a sudden supposed to be dramatic. For example, in episode 6, Otonashi arrives to the scene of all his friends lying dead/beaten by Naoi or whatever. This is supposed to be a dramatic scene. But when the show was killing characters as a joke earlier, it's hard to take any of that scene seriously.

No. I don't think I told you this part before, but all the male characters are voiced by female VAs. So the female VAs do a young boy's voice for a lot of the characters. But in the end it just fits because they're talented and it works well with the fictional setting.

Like I said the whole thing is crazy, but it works so well in the end. It's really unique when it comes to anime (they just don't create anime like this anymore due to the risk) so that's why I enjoy mentioning it often.

There was little to no buildup for the drama. The final scene involving Kanade's goodbye was so cliched that it was laughable. I'm not saying that all Key dramas are bad, but Angel Beats is terrible because there was no character development whatsoever. Ayato turns from the most evil villain to a good guy in the space of one episode. They tried so hard, but it failed nonetheless.

I touched on this and said I think it would have been better if they'd have had more episodes. I don't feel like you need to thoroughly explore every single character in a show especially if they aren't really in the spotlight. They gave us the development of the main characters as well as a couple less central ones.

It seemed like they spent most of that episode trying to set up a more serious tone so it didn't seem like they were just hopping back and forth between jokes and drama at will. I know where you're coming from but it seems to me like the show took on a more serious tone when it needed to and dropped it at times when it could. I didn't marathon the whole show at once so maybe that's why I got that feeling.

That is irrelevant. The point I'm making is, at the beginning of the series, dying in that world is not a big deal, because you come back to life. They even kill the protagonist for laughs. However, regardless of how it was set up, it is still hard to take it seriously, considering what they had done in the previous episodes, how death is treated in the show, and how they will all come back to life afterwards and more gags will ensue.

Railgun's plot had awful pacing and the show had even more fan service than AB. The only reason Railgun could be given an excuse for its weak plot is if it was a full-fledged SoL, but it isn't.
