Don't be afraid to play without knowing all the rules (especially don't even bother learning scoring yet, let the computer take care of it for now). You'll learn as you go as long as you know the basics. Start out against the cpu and then play randoms on tenhou when you're more comfortable.

The most frustrating thing as a beginner is when you make 4 sets and a pair but it isn't a legal hand and you can't win off it. You need a 'yaku' (hand point) to be able to ron/tsumo (declare a win). Since there are a lot of yaku and it can be overwhelming at first, I recommend you learn the yaku "riichi" and "yakuhai" and start playing the game from there, learning more yaku as you go on. It's very important to note that some hands (like riichi) require you to have a completely concealed hand (meaning no calling tiles with pon/chi).

Would you aslo declare daburi in this situation, /jp/? Whenever I play I go damaten in 14/15 cases because every single time I declare riichi I deal into baiman within 5 turns. But I'd rather deal into baiman than break up a hand in tenpai for kokushi.

Against daburi the only choices I see are folding altogether or going for a quick shitty hand. If I were to fold I'd probably deal that 9 pin, then the second on the following turn. If you go for a shitty hand you'd keep that sha and chun and hope to get a pon on that. Dealing sha looks pretty stupid to me.
