Liking Okuu isn't that different from liking Cirno or Flandre. They all have gimmicky powers, and cliché and shallow personalities. The only real difference is that Subterranean Animism came out in 2008 while Embodiment of Scarlet Devil came out in 2002, making the former less of a target for new and inexperienced fans.

And this is while characters from Undefined Fantastic Object and Ten Desires are hated or shunned, simply because they're "too hard to understand". While in reality it's just that their powers are original and their backstories elaborate. The casts of the two later games are more popular in Japan than here, perhaps because a native japanese person has an advantage when it comes to knowing of and understanding the original historical events the characters are tied to. To like Okuu all you need to understand is that she's "a badass idiot who controls nuclear fusion".

While I like the setting and general story-line of Subterranean Animism, I'd like to point out, that not only including and post Mountain of Faith but perhaps in all of Windows era Touhou, Okuu is the least developed, least interesting and least intimidating villain. Not to mention her motive is the least elaborate and engaging of all.

Every Touhou character is shallow as hell, you can only make inferences out of their basic actions and 99% of their popularity is based on things made up by fans like music videos and the like. The only exception being the main characters who do have enough screentime to define their entire personality and attributes.

In Okuu's case, she is liked because she's the only character to have actually acted the role of a world-destroying villain instead of just ''someone who is being mischevious out of personal gain'' like every other final boss in Touhou. The stuff about TD you wrote seems to be correct. It's mostly the newer fans that dislike the TD cast and claim that they "don't fit into touhou" despite being a lot more eastern related than Utsuho.

But that's not true. We have more canon information on Okuu that any other non-main character touhou. We know her motivations, where she got here power, her (very clear) relations to other characters, 12.3 expanded on her personality, and we now exactly what she is doing after her game. She is also one of the few characters to actually interact with characters of another game.

If UFO and TD are were so elaborate, explain Kogasa. Kyouko's power isn't that original. Neither she nor Yoshika have deep or elaborate backstories. Wow Seiga can pass through walls, how complicated and original. The power to manipulate Feng Shui? The power to listen to people's desires? Boring and already done.

It's nice how you brought up Seiga. She's a fine example of character who, even in her profile alone is well-developed. We know many details of the life she lived, we even know some of the life-changing decisions she made in life. Her power ties into the classic Chinese horror story her character is partially based on, and helps to generally build up a clear image of her "unpleasant" personality.

I would say ZUN started running out of ideas as the series progressed. As an example, (and in my humble opinion) most of the more beautiful songs are condensed within the earlier games.

There are a few jewels in the latter games, though. But almost the entirety of the OST from EoSD, PCB, IN was golden for me. Sadly, now I get to find truly amazing only like 2-3 songs per game.

And the same thing happened to the characters, in the earlier games I loved the totality of the cast, while now in the newer ones I only get to like a few, but with great affection.

The same could all be said of Okuu. We know she is the one of Satori's pets and her job was to regulate the fires of Hell. We also know that that was her power before she heard the voice of god (who turned out to be Kanako), and we know she is a little dumb as she misunderstood "fulfill the wishes of Hell and the above world" as "CONQUER THE WORLD". That is why she ate Yatagarasu.

The whole cast of SA is very well fleshed out, which is why it is incredibly popular in Japan and overseas.

I didn't factor in the book series. But even then, we have Remilia and co. throwing big ass parties and that's it. The rest of the PCB cast interact with each other and break into the moon. I guess Yuyuko interacts with random bunnies. Yukari is definitely a main character and she does interact with a wide range of characters. Eientei is still pretty isolationist with literal cameos thrown about. The three fairies are the three fairies and were basically made to interact with the entire cast. Yes, we do. We know she's a hell raven who is in charge of keeping the former hell heated. She is Satori's pet, and she's a little dumb, since she's a bird and half of her brain is used to calculate the complicated formulas to perform nuclear fusion. She obtained her powers when Kanako influenced her to eat the Yataragasu, thus obtaining the power of the sun. She's best friends with Orin, who is also Satori's pet and works with her.

We will know more about her as soon as we get our hands on Symposium of Post-Mysticism.

Okuu appeared in two games, and interacted with the Moriyas and the player characters. How is this more than any other plot-related character? All the characters resident in the Myouren Temple at the end of UFO also interacted with the Moriyas, they helped them build the temple. Mamizou and Kyouko have appeared in Wild and Horned Hermit, and the Moriyas have all had several appearances there as well. Just who are you comparing Okuu to when you say she's had more interactions? She's gotten around more than anyone else from SA, but she's just average at best.

Actually, most characters who have backstories actually have it almost 100% taken from ancient Japanese mythology, like Seiga for example, not just the whole character reference that is each character.

We do, if you read the manual, you'd know that after she ''awoke from a long sleep'', she found out that Chireiden had appeared where the old hell was and she was taken in by Satori along with Orin, whom she was friends with, and every other random animal youkai in the surroundings. As for the power, she stated it herself, she wanted the Old Hell to return so she was planning to settle in the surface by burning everything and everyone, however she didn't want to do this right away, according to Orin, she started experimenting and slowly became more and more insane and powerhungry until SA happened.

Now OP, I do not see what point there is to attempt to convince people that liking a certain character is shallow, is it because it upsets you how others see her? Because that's where ''everyone else does hate posts why can't I do it'' comes from, some people dislike when fans try to mix in fanon with canon or just confuse them, this happens quite often in Keine threads, but nowhere does it go as far as ''making threads for the purpose of lowering a character's status''.

While it's true that Okuu does not have as much shown interaction as other characters, she is popular in Japan, more so than in the west even. The Pixiv contest was more of an evidence than the mere click-and-vote popularity contest that happens every year around February, since it shows both dedication to a game to the point of making derivative works and popularity with the public, since the number of views' were the ''points''.

Also, please do not make such blatant comments such as Okuu being the ''least developed'' or that your characters are ''hated by the west and loved the east'', it only goes to show the obvious factor that you're somehow annoyed by your preferences not being accepted enough in your eyes and the need to lash out against others by making FALSE statements. Like say, Remilia has lots of appearances, yet we know more about Okuu's past than her or any character in EoSD and most characters in the later games, even when they have the advantage of being around for years and thus more chances of appearing in books.

I also don't see the focus on development when Touhou is a series known for its shallow characters and backstories copy pasted and adapted somewhat into modern times from ancient japanese tales that go further than a simple reference/homage.

I have to say, this has been an interesting discussion, but I'm gonna stick my two cents in whether you like it or not. Since my computer won't let me download Winrar or any .rar players, I can't play the Touhou games. But either way, I've figured out all the Touhou games's plots and characters except Ten Desires. I can't find a synopsis anywhere. And another thing is, neither in UFO not TD (As far as I know) were the final bosses plotting anything remotely evil, hell, Byakuren wanted to bring PEACE to Gensokyo. In all the others, however, the final bosses were doing something somewhat evil (Except maybe Shikieiki, that's to be debated) And ZUN doesn't give the characters particularly detailed personalities because you guys have to remember it is considered a "Fan-made shooter game" emphasis being on "Fan-made." ZUN wants this to be more of a community effort that anything, or at least that's how I see. That's my two cents, and you're welcome to agree or disagree with me.

I really hope you are not falsely assuming that having a back story means the character is fleshed out. Check out the main character's Reimu's back story, what do you know about her? You know she is a shrine maiden, she lives in a shrine, animals like her, her personality, and she has genji as a pet. But, you do not know her back story. For instance, why is she alone, who is the Hakurei shrine god, and other relevant information. Yet, I hope you would not argue that Reimu is not one of the most developed characters in Touhou.

As for Okuu, she doesn't have much of a story, so you may have to wait for Symposium of Post Mysticism. The stuff is mentioned is hardly what I would call a back story.

She also only appeared once or twice in the mangas and in none of those appearances did it develop her.

Like I said I don't really believe her brief backstory counts as development but she is by no means the least developed character at all like OP claims. Though I completely agree to the fact you can't compare her to the older characters who have had more time to appear in other works. But at the same time you can't compare someone like Utsuho to stage 3 characters like some people are, of course she is going to have more development than them being the primary antagonist of SA.

But that's wrong. Take Imperishable Night's last boss, for example. ZUN used the beautiful Japanese story 'Story of the Bamboo Cutter', also known as 'Kaguya-Hime'. In this game, he made several changes to Kaguya that stayed consistent with the original story. In the original story, Kaguya fled to the moon after leaving the elixir of immortality to the emperor. ZUN added to that and made her a refuge who ran from the moon shortly afterwords due to the lunar war. Eirin too, has quite a bit of development despite being Kaguya's accomplice. Eirin has her murderous way with more innocent people than fandom seems to let into. ZUN took it even further with Mokou. He used the dangling elixir of immortality left on Earth to make her own arc that he revealed in the fourth chapter of CiaLR.
If all Touhou characters are shallow, ZUN wouldn't have done any of that. Maybe fandom is that shallow, maybe characters in other games are shallow, but that gives ZUN more the reason to make characters in his games that aren't shallow even more. Because like he said before, he made Touhou because he couldn't find games that he liked, so he made his own.
